Going to look at a CJ need some advice.
My old soccer coach has a CJ just sitting in his yard and I asked if I could buy it, which thankfully he said yes. He knows nothing about it considering it was his wife's when she was in high school so i'm hoping to pick it up for around 500-1,000 dollars. Now my question is what all do I need to look for? I know a main thing is rust but what else other than that? Thanks in advance.

Check the frame at both ends where the bumpers and shackles attach, these areas are prone to rotting from mud and dirt getting trapped in the ends of the frame. Also check the other spring hangers on the frame looking for cracks in the frame around the spring mounts. If you see cracks or a rotting frame forget it unless you just have to have a CJ.

REASON for buying the coach's Jeep?
I recently purchased my CJ-5 from a friend who had it since new, it has been garaged its entire life but parked for the past 12 years. I was surprised at what I needed to replaced and the cost, since I will soon surpass the $4,000 mark in repairs. The reason why I ask is if you are looking for an inexpensive daily driver, well, you may become as surprised as I was.

I have replaced:
New Drum Brake Cylinders (4), Brake Master Cylinder, Brake lines, Fuel Pump, Water Pump, Battery, Tires, Leaf Springs, Shocks, Numerous Light bulbs on vehicle-in gauges-etc, Body Mounts, Engine Mounts, Transmission Mounts, Tail Lights, All Rubber Hoses, All Belts, Steering Shaft Assembly, Wiper Blades, Radio, Speakers, Antenna...

when any Jeep or car or truck for that matter that sits vs being driven for extended periods of time, the soft parts begin to wear out faster, no use is a bad thing, as most of them need the mositure of the fluid running through them. Now things like body mounts and other hard parts just decay over time, dry rot.

As for the CJ, also make sure it runs.. make sure the 4wd works, make sure it has the emmsions stuff on it, take a magnet with you to check for body work filler vs metal. Make sure the hubs work.
