Tru-lok Trak-lok Question. Help!

Hello all, I'm a new first time jeep owner. I've purchased a 04 Rubicon and have questions concerning trak-lok and tru-lock features.

I see a tru-lock button on my dash and have been reading about how to use it, however since I have tru-lock how would I know if I have the trak-lok feature. I don't see a button or switch on the dash that says trak-lock. How can you tell?

Also if I'm running tru-lock does it have limited slip differential front and back? Or at all?

Help me get this right in my mind please…..

welcome to the WF forums.

The stock Rubicon comes with locking front and rear differential, air actuated. There should be a switch under your climate controls to turn it on and off. Push once for rear lock and twice for rear/front lock. You should see some indicator lights on the dash indicating which is locked.

Also, you can request the build sheet from Chrysler for your Jeep. It will tell you what it came with from the factory, including limited slip, etc.

Hope that helps a little. I don't currently own a Rubicon, but my buddy does.

the rear has limited-slip when unlocked
the front is open when unlocked

do the locker mod

So, 4H and 4L all wheels locked no LSD. Tru-loc activated in 4L rear LSD, press it again and LSD in both Front and Rear axle?

Is this correct and what it the locker mod?

jdhallissey 04-12-2010 05:03 PM

No, the trac lok in the rear is just that. It will spin the opposite tire when the main tire starts spinning. IE left tire is spinning in the rear well the right one will spin then too. The front does not have a trac lok, it is just open mean only one tire will spin at a given time.

To your lockers- when you turn that switch on in 4lo (say the rear) both rear tires are locked together meaning they will spin together no matter what you do. Same goes for when you lock the front, they will spin together until you unlock them.

Locker mod lets you lock the axles in 4hi which is needed in my book. I have the rubi axles in my jeep so I have mine setup a little different tho- I have 2 seperate switches to control my axles one for front one for rear. :punk: Have fun with them.

ok, so what you are saying is even though I have it in 4L (4 wheel drive) if I press the AXLE LOCK (TRU–LOK™) button it will lock just the rear and unlock the front unless I press it again?

When does the LSD come into play? is it active all the time when locked in 4 wheel drive?

this guy is confusing me

If your in 2wd you have a limited slip only in the rear axle. When in 4wd low with no buttons pressed.. you still have limited slip in rear only. Push button, and rear go's from limited slip to fully locked. Press again and front locks. That is my understanding. In 4 hi you have no lockers from the factory.. i will guess the limited slip will work in 4hi too.

and this is where the locker mod comes into play

4jeepn, thanks, you have given me the clearest explanation as of yet. So, the limited slip is present in the rear at 2H. At the rear in 4H and 4L. And none present with axels locked with the button.

If anybody else want to add to this please do.

Thanks.

theres a light in your upper rigth of your instrument cluster that will show "rear lock" then press again and the "front lock" will light up assumeing your in 4L

bpm54 04-13-2010 12:59 PM

Frankthetank, Yeah got that. The little bit of info concerning this Tru-Lok and Trac-Lok system came from the on-line 2004 TJ Wrangler manual I was able to download it from the Net. My purchase didn't come with a manual.

The info was kind of vague. My main confusion was about the LSD capabilities with the Rubicon. I couldn't ascertain from the manual if LSD was all the time, both front and rear axles in 2H, 4H and 4L or, if it was active when using the axle locker button.

But unless you know different, then I would assume that what 4jeepn posted is correct.

Also, read somewhere were the Trac-lok system was for the Sahara basic wrangler TJ and the Rubicon got the better of the two with the Tru-Lok system

04tjrubicon 04-13-2010 01:08 PM

your confusing yourself with all the tru lok,and trac lok crap

it a selling pitch, brand name shit

the rear is lsd when unlocked, simple
front is open when unlocked,simple

and u can only engage your lockers in 4lo,unless u do the mod

bpm54 04-13-2010 01:31 PM

Thanks 04tjrubicon, that is what I'm talking bout.

What is the MOD you speak of?

pking911 04-13-2010 01:34 PM

it's in a post here somewhere. They altered the switch to bypass the "lo" sensor, basically.
This allowed them to lock the axles regardless of hi or lo gear.

hummmm, that's cool. At this point I've yet to take it off road. Just trying to get the basics down with the gearing before I do so.

Is the mod difficult?

dude type dumbest guy in the world in google and theres me,and i did it

bpm54 04-13-2010 04:14 PM

04tjrubicon, I'm afraid that google search would find someone else, I suspect one of my co-workers. But that is good to know that it's easy. I think I really need to get comfortable with it un-modifed and then maybe.

jdhallissey 04-13-2010 06:16 PM

haha you guys can screw up a WET DREAM. Holly cow.

Trac lok will work anytime the locker in the rear is NOT locked. Simple. 2hi 4hi 4lo the rear will always have the trac lok. When you lock it it will not slip hence the word LOCKER! Make sense now?

bpm54 04-14-2010 11:12 AM

JDhallissey, You say the it would be rear limited slip differential 2H, 4H and 4L then none when locked. Makes sense.

I'm kind of surprised that the rubicon doesn't have front LSD as well.
