Black "JEEP" letters on grill

Has anyone done this? It is the only chrome on my Rubi and I don't like it. What would be the best way to black these out?

Thanks, Dan

Yes, I did it and it looks nice.. You need to take them off with a piece of fishing line. Like sawing through the letter foam backing with this line.. The imprints on the grille give you a good mark as to where to re-install them.. Sand them down with some soft scrub pads, solvent clean and spray paint them..
Then re-apply some 3M outdoor molding 2 sided tape (is a painstaking job to cut the letter contours) Clean the grille surface with some solvent and stick the letters back ...Keep some push pressure on the letters for about 2 minutes..

I left out the part of scraping off the sticky tape from the letters.. Indeed you need to re apply some NEW 2 sided tape..and you have to trim it around the letters..This is a somewhat time consuming part in this project..
But no pain, no gain...

WOW! Nice looking Jeep.

That is a little more work that I was hoping for, but the results look to be well worth it. I will have to think long and hard about this one.
Thanks for the info.

TNX... Keep in mind these kind of minor mods will set your Jeep apart..(granted, it takes some time)
Do it the right way and these letters will not come loose and last but not least, it looks professional..

If I am not mistaken, and I often am, it is called Jeep Green.

The solvent you refer to, what kind is it. I don't want to melt the paint off.

Hey Antigoon...looks like ya missed your side marker guards? I went with the light guards on my rig all around too. Like the way they look! Your Rig looks Awesome Buddy!:D

WranglerX2009 04-13-2010 06:07 AM

Looks decent. I just left mine off all together. I like it that way personally.

You can get wax & grease remover specifically for this purpose. $5 at O'Reilleys
Wipe it on wet, dry it off.

Also, when you strip the emblem off, you need to remove all of the adhesive from both the vehicle and the emblem. It can be a painstaking process but because your vehicle is fairly new, it may not be too much of a challenge. There are a number of products that will do this. I prefer good old fashioned lighter fluid. It's cheap and it won't harm paint or plastic. Remove as much of the foam as you can then wet it with the fluid it and work the adhesive off.

Use the right tape to put it back on. Household stuff isn't tough enough to hold up the the elements.
3M 3609 - Scotch-Mount™ Molding Tape, 1/2 inch x 60 inch 3M-3609 3M3609 3M 3609

Apply the tape to the back of the emblem and then use an Xacto knife or razor blade to gently trim around the edges so that it won't show when you reapply the emblem to the vehicle.

You have very sharp eyes...;)
Indeed they haven't been done yet.. For one or another reason I had an issue removing the side marker base..Still got the guards and now you have put me on notice...:)

Looks great, also adding this to my to-do list - Thanks

What's the best kind of spray paint to use??

InfernoGirl 04-13-2010 05:22 PM

Fusion for plastic would be best, since they're plastic.... Not necessary, but if you're buying anyway.... Put some clear over them to protect them from chipping, too.

Got it fixed this morning...But had to use new rivets to re-attach the marker housing to the fender..Now it looks "finished"...;)

J.B. 04-14-2010 08:17 PM

B/c the letters are chrome did you sand the actual letters before hitting them with the spray paint? I would think a light sand would be necessary for the paint to stick properly

I like that bumper, which one is that and was it hard to install? Would the extra weight of a steel bumper be a bit much for my stock geared manual tranny jeep?

wrangler0 04-25-2010 10:35 AM

Looks like the Rugged Ridge XHD bumper....

This is a Rugged Ridge XHD bumper.. It comes in different options.. see here
As far as the weight is concerned I had some sagging and this was resolved once I got a lift.. I have a 3.21 gear manual transmission and never experienced an issue with that extra weight..(I also have the RR rear bumper, front skid plate and their tubular side armor)

......resurrecting the thread with a quick question.........

Think black touch-up paint would work w/out taking off the lettering?? I already have a bottle from a previous vehicle I owned.

If you are an artist in masking off all what you need to mask off (don't forget the inside of the letters...) and can sand the chrome finish down without damaging the grill... Well there is your answer.. My opinion, take them off and do it right..

InfernoGirl 05-01-2010 11:38 PM

x2 on this^^^^ If you don't scuff them it will wear off pretty quickly, and scuffing them without removing them would be quite a challenge. Taking them off is easy as pie, like Mr. Goon said, cutting the tape to re-adhere them is probably the hardest part of the job.... To me the looks make it worth the effort. If I had a JK, I'd definitely do it. In fact, if you don't want to do the trimming, etc, take off the letters, send 'em to me, and I'll send 'em back to you ready to stick on... for a small fee :)

looks good
