hard top

Hey guys I recently purchased a 1998 Jeep Wrangler TJ, my first jeep, and I have a question about my hard top. When i have my windows down the top hits against the roll bar where the speakers are making a really loud banging noise. I was just wondering if this is normal and if there is anyway to remedy it. thanks a lot for ur help.

Hey Chris.
Welcome to the forum. :wavey:

No that doesn't seem normal to me at all.
I too have a 98 with a hard top.
I have enough space between my top and the sound bar to squeeze my hand through.

As for a remedy:
I would say try to fit something soft inbetween the two to stop it from smacking around, but in my opinion, it really shouldn't be sitting like that in the first place, if the top is on correctly.

I think you should try and figure out why it's sitting like that first,
then go from there.

Wait for some other members to chime in.
They might know why it's sitting so low.

is the top latched securely? Are all 6 bolts fastened tightly?

Banging? Do you have the padding on the roll bar? As indicated above, you may need some cushion in there.

Chris.

I went out at lunch to take a better look at mine.

From behind the soundbar,
I have enough room to easily slide all my fingers inbetween the top and the soundbar.
(Not my entire hand, sorry. lol.)
In front of the sound bar,
there's a lip that comes down from the top and sits snugly against the sound bar's padding.

It sounds like you don't have any padding there.
If you don't, that's probably what is making the noise.
I still don't understand why that hard top would be flapping up and down against the bar unless it's not seated properly.
As already stated,
double check all your bolts and clamps man. :)

Did you install the hard top yourself or was it on your Jeep when you purchased it. There should be a rubber gasket around the base of the top that helps it seal and keep out noise. The seal on mine is 3/8" I believe. If that is missing it can make a big difference in how the top sits.

"When I let my window down" ?

Your hardtop should not be resting on the windows at all. You are definitely missing something, the top is sitting too low, either no gasket or you have a mismatched hardtop.

thanks a lot for ur help guys. I was thinking the same thing that it just needed padding.

It came with the hard top and the noise is only when the window is open and i'm going over 55. I have changed my hard top with my soft top a few times and everything seems to be fitting right. hopefully it just needs padding.

Make sure the windshield frame is in the correct position. Close the doors and look at t he fit. It may be back too far.

Sounds like when the windows are down its mixing up the air pressure in the jeep. air pushing down from top, plus up from windows being down. Causing the slamming? I'm not sure, quick fix? Tuck a rag in there.

Yea my friend's Jeep does the same thing with the banging. You're simply just missing the padding that goes in between there. Not a big issue.
