Soft top rear window?

This is a newbie question but bear with me. I recently changed my TJ's hard top to the stock soft top however I'm having a hell of a time trying to figure out how to put in the rear window. I zipped it all up but the trouble I'm having is with the bottom rail part. I've racked my brain trying to figure out how it goes but haven't been able to figure it out! I could use any help you guys can give me, and a pic of how its supposed to look would help too. Thanks!

Do you have the tailgate bar? There's a thin metal bar with some gaskets on it that spans across the top of the tailgate. The rear window slides into that - there's a u-shaped groove in the tailgate bar that it slides right into.

I think that might be missing from my tailgate. The only bar there is the one attatched to the actual window itself with the weather stripping. But I don't have anything attatched to the tailgate itself, or the sides.

Your tailgate bar may be attached to the window, which is good.
Now you need to attach the tailgate bar to your Jeep.

Do you have little brackets on either side of the tailgate where this bar would just snap into?

The bar attached to the window is what you need. It rolls under/clips into the retainer clips on the sides in the back. Google soft top installation videos on youtube, and you should find one to show you how to do it :D

It's not a good photo, but this shows the tailgate bar plus the two brackets that would be attached to the Jeep

just installed my new bestop last week. it was a breeze installing it. nothin hard about it. im well pleased with the outcome

those brackets are on each side of the tailgate. bar slipes right into them. removes easily too.

which one did you get from bestop? I'm thinking about getting the replace-a-top, with tinted windows.

I just got another soft top and new windows a few weeks ago, and I must admit, I struggled with the rear window. I've got a friend who deals in Wranglers (over 50 in stock) and went to his shop and he showed me. He first got WD40 and sprayed on the first 6 inches of the zipper on the drivers rear side. You should have to zipper clasps that need to be on the left side at first. Once you get the zipper installed in both clasps, zip the upper zipper clasp all away around the window so you have one on the bottom of the left and right side. Then all you have to do is unzip both sides straight up, and then roll the window up and use the straps included to snap it. Once he did it, I felt pretty stupid, but, who cares, it's done now. Good luck.

Ahhh, I think the problem is that I'm missing those side clips where the center bar is supposed to just clip into. They're not attatched to the window nor the actual tailgate (or the sides for that matter). I'm guessing the previous owner might have lost that part of the hardware and thats why I don't have it. I'll have to look around and see if they were just misplaced or fell off or something but I'm getting the feeling I don't have them at all.

The brackets are screwed to the tub on each side of the tail gate.
You can see them here: (please excuse my drawing skills... apparently this is harder than it looks... :D

A little off topic but I dont have a bar neither and just ordered a RAT will i need to order one for my top to fit?

Neil F. 04-14-2010 09:09 AM

Yes you need the bar and brackets to secure the rear window. If you orderded the RAT, that means you have a softtop already, correct? If so, how is your rear window secured now?

I just lower the bar that tightens the soft top and unbutton it from the back. Then i just undo it from the front. I don't unzip or re zip anything until i have it off the car, it is much easier this way and takes about a minute to take off and 5 to put back on solo.

I just use the brackets on either side of the tailgate to slide the belt in. The top i had was old as dirt and looked like it is missing that bar.
