Broken Wheel Studs
 
My mother just came over and said that her 03 TJ was making a weird noise from the rear passenger side wheel. She thought it was a flat tire. What I found was 2 broken wheel lugs! I've never seen that before. Stock tires and wheels...nothing but a commute back and forth to work...weird. I'm guessing the local garage over-torqued the lug nuts when they rotated her tires a couple weeks ago. The other 3 were torques so tightly that I couldn't move them with a breaker bar...had to use the impact driver to remove. So I tried to remove the drum and it's not moving. Any recommendations on getting those bad boys off? I smacked the hell out of them with a brass hammer, but they're not cooperating. Can the lugs be removed and replaced without major surgery? I'm guessing the rear brakes are probably smoked so I'll do those while I'm in there. Big fun.

Lugs should come out just fine, nothing major. As for the drum.. bigger hammer and pry bar use or some heat on it.

I just went through the same thing. I used pb blaster and soaked the ceter of the hub with it then tap the drum all the way around till it broke lose stay with and it should work its way off

Down to Napa for a couple new studs...$2.99 each...jacked it up...removed the wheel...beat on the drum with every hammer in my arsenal...no luck...pulled out my largest 3 jaw gear puller and it just fit...put the impact driver to it and the drum finally popped off with a little bit of warping at the center. Knocked the crap out of the studs in an attempt to dislodge them...no dice...air hammer for a few minutes...5 lb sledge...they came out. Put the new studs in from the back...seated them with a stack of washers, lug nut, and impact driver until they were close to bottomed. Installed the wheel...cranked it down...went for a ride and tightened again. All in all...1.5 hours, $20, and a bunch of tools...not a bad job.

As I read deeper into your last post, I was certain the punch line was gonna be that you damaged the drum beyond repair and would have to replace it. I'm glad it worked out for you!

Stole the sig from someone else...I wish I had thought of it myself.

Incidentally, I'm doing a full break job on the TJ this weekend...drums, rotors, pads, shoes, spring kit, and anything else that looks sketchy. The emergency brakes don't even work and I could turn the rear wheel even with my kid holding the brake pedal down with both feet. I interrogated my mother and she said " I don't really use the brakes anyways". The Jeep's got 65,000 miles and probably the original brakes.

If those are the original brakes, buy a box of brake clean, cause your gonna need it.
Oh and I speak from experience on this statement, with brakes and brake parts you get what you pay for! Personally I put cheap pads on a vehicle once.....................only once
