Front differential leak? help please!

Hey everybody,

I just had my wrangler serviced. New transfer case installed, full brake job, and of course oil change and fluids topped off. Made about a 120 mile highway trip and have come to notice a dark spot a little smaller than a mouse pad right underneath. I drove it a little around town yesterday with no problems, then parked it again. This morning there is another spot. Its not drying clear so I'm afraid its an oil leak. It appears to be right under the front differential. I'm worried now. I read that it might just be too full and it will eventually just get to a comfortable level? Is that true? I will check later to see if there are any bolts with oil around them. Do I need to send this back to the shop?

Open the fill plug the oil should be right to the bottom of the plug hole. Next try and figure out if the lube is coming from the cover, plug, or pinion. It will probably be a bad seal on the cover. If so drain it, clean off the metal all the way around the opening on the diff and the cover. Get some rtv sealant and run a bead around the cover and put back together.

x2 on pulling the plug to see if it was overfilled first and immediately. Chances are if it was overfilled, by the time it "eventually just gets to a comfortable level" your axle seals will be shot and you'll have a much bigger problem to deal with. Try to find the leak, hopefully it's just a bad seal around the diff cover, if so, I'd take it back to the shop and have them redo it correctly. Do you know if they even pulled the cover? My diffs have a drain plug on the diff housing and most places being lazy, would just pull the plug vs. taking off the cover.
