Living in an apartment and keeping your jeep out?
So I'm not sure what to do in my upcoming situation.

I am moving out of my place of which where my jeep was parked in a garage (came with the apartment), and that has been parked outside with just a bikini top on without any problems because of the neighborhood. Now the place I'm moving to is a little bit on the ok place to live (think between a good place and semi ghetto), and I will have a carport, but I'm weary of leaving a bikini top on. Yes there are some car breakins and yes there can be some issues with homeless people wandering about and what not.

My question is, for those that have specifically a stock jeep living in an area like this, what do you do for your summer? I'm starting to think more of a soft top or to just leave my hardtop on until I get through this year and know for a fact how the neighborhood is.

1. don't leave anything in the jeep you care about.
2. go with the hardtop for a while till you see how the area is.

I agree! when I first moved to my Apt I left the Bikini Top on but my carport was right across my apt so I could see it out the window. I put my hardtop on eventually cause people kept getting weirder and weirder or maybe that was just me. I never had a problem but you got to get to know the neighborhood first you can't just assume.

I live in a college apartment complex and while my top is down, I don't leave anything valuable, everything is locked up. Granted my Jeep has been pissed in and had a doughnut thrown inside it, but I haven't had my sub or amp stolen out of the back or anything permanently damaged.

You really want to see what the area is like at first... You may be allright, and you may get your Jeep pooped in (Don't laugh, it happens -ok, maybe laugh a little...). If you have a hard top, it sure won't hurt anything to leave it on for a little bit until you are sure of your surroundings. As usual, and as others always say - never leave anything in it either.

A little caution can go a long way.

Like everyone else i say leave the hard top on for a week or two just to get a feel of the surroundings. I live in a low crime area and the most valuable thing i will ever leave in my jeep at night or un-attended is a couple coins in the tray. dont leave anything of value!!

install a security switch, and dont leave ANYTHING in your jeep, you'll do fine

if you're home your jeep is home, right? you are an able guardian of the jeep, right?

Don't lock anything and don't leave anything in the Jeep you would like to see again...

chitownjp 04-15-2010 09:42 AM

What JSquared and everyone else are saying. And don't lock your doors, center console or glove box. Even if there's nothing in there people will still try to break in. It's better if they just can open everything up with damaging your Jeep. I live in the city and installed an alarm with motion sensor to hopefully persuade homeless people from sleeping in the Jeep. There's a few that wander around my place in the alleys. Also, be sure to get locking lug nuts. I don't know if the spare tire stealing dilemna has hit where you live but here in Chicago it's a big problem. I just found out last weekend that someone tried to steal my spare. They got one lug nut off then hit the locking one and moved on. It's amazing what desperate people will do.

i live in a pretty rough neighborhood. doesn't matter if you leave it locked or unlocked, top on or top off, if there is something there that somebody wants they are going to get it. i never leave anything of the value in it and because i have a soft top i never lock it. it would cost more to replace it if someone cut the top than anything i have inside.

Leave the hard top on, and if you have the money, tint the windows all the way around because if they can not see whats inside, why would they break in?

TJSportGirl 04-17-2010 02:10 PM

Thanx to all. Unfortunately my carport is not in front of my window, so I won't be able to tell if anyone breaks in, till the next day or when I'm out walking. Also, does having tinted windows help somewhat? My back windows I've tinted to a 10% darker. And the fronts are 20% dark. I've been thinking about the vehicle alarm, motion sensor, but not exactly sure which one will be sufficient and that won't go off with strong winds or very loud lightning.

I recently made the move from a house to an apartment. Before the move I reinstalled the stock radio just so as to not have to worry about it, got a set of locking lugs, and a set of those anti-theft door nuts. As has already been stated, nothing is theft proof... but you may as well make the bastards work for it.

If you do the alarm thing, be sure the motion sensor, shock sensor, etc has the sensitivity set relatively low so as to avoid false alarms. If you have an alarm that goes off every time it thunders, people will completely disregard it when it goes off for real.

i live in a lousy town. i've got a soft top. i never lock ANYTHING. this being for the reason i don't want some idiot cutting my top for $4 in change in my cup holder. morons dont realize you can just unzip the sides lol! there's nothing valueable in my jeep. take it. just leave my top alone.

TJSportGirl 04-17-2010 09:32 PM

Riptide, yep I still have the stock stereo in just because I'm lazy and didn't want to buy a new one lol. And thank you for the advice on the alarm, yea, that's one thing that I'd be worried about. Any ideas on a good one? Even though the police and fire dept are 2 blocks down, I doubt they'd be able to arrive on time before the person takes off, if it comes to that.
And nope, shoot, my center console and glovebox doesn't even shut correctly anymore. So possibly taking my car insurance out might be a good idea, is this what I'm gathering?
