Dana 35c Axle

Just wondering how much these can handle? In tires size that is. i am thinking about getting 31" tires, just wondering if i will have any complications with the axle components breaking because of the bigger tires.

Thanks in Advance!

You should be okay with 31s theoretically. Most experts would advise against locking the D35c though unless it has been upgraded. 33" is usually recognized as max for that axle and that is probably pushing it.

I'm sure there are many who would disagree and say they run 33s or even 35s with no problem. I am only regurgitating what I have read - I have no experience with the D35 personally.

mine lived with 31s unlocked for a while through a fair amount of abuse before i upgraded. i have seen them break with 33"s open. are you going to wheel it at all?

31" tires won't normally break the D35c's axle shafts but I have seen it happen when the driver drove it stupid-aggressive. For most people though, it handles 31" tires fine within reason. :)

I have run 31's with a Detroit and not had breakage (I6 w/auto). Also ran 32's with a lunchbox locker and broke the carier. Open rear dif should not be a problem.

I plan on doing a little off-roading maybe, because it is hard to do in CT. Eventually i will upgrade to a better axle, and bigger tires and such, but not for a little while...

Another question, What gearing does a stock 97" TJ have? Should i change it, for more power, or gas mileage?

I have seen stock locked on 31's bust a shaft.. Open then will live longer and maybe not be any issue depending on the type of wheeling you do. As for gears which engine and trans do you have?

leave it open and dont bounce it too bad and it should hold up to 33s fine. if you have an auto it will hold up even better.. Ive been pounding my stock 35 for years.

I have a 4 banger with the stock trans. And i have no idea what gearing i have, hoping you would know or give me a suggestion or two on which gear ratio to have?

And i won't pound on it bad or anything, i guess the axle will hold up fine for a while, i hope a least 8 months... by then i will have a better, bigger axle.

with the 2.5 engine, you should have 4.10 gears. however it appears there were some random exceptions to that........

Jerry Bransford 04-19-2010 09:01 PM

Your '97 with the four-banger likely has 4.10/4.11 gears in its axles. For 31" tires, I would stay with the 4.11 gearing. When/if you get to 33" tires with stronger axles, that would be the time to regear to 4.88. :)

Delete - Jerry beat me to it and you'd be better off with his advice.
