The new guy's first post

Hello! Just bought my first jeep, a 98 TJ Sport, and I'm VERY proud to be a member of the Jeep community! This is my first post on the forum, so bear with me on my first inquiry:
I sort of expected bad gas mileage, but I feel like I'm getting even worse mileage than I should be. Here's what the Jeep has (that I've found so far) for the major aftermarket goodies :

-Poweraid throttle body spacer
-custom rancho shocks
-I believe a 2" lift
-larger tires (I don't know the exact dimensions off hand, but I don't believe much larger than stock)
-Airbox removed, custom cone air filter, open end, no plate between filter and engine
-Banks Monster full exhaust system

Being VERY nice to it, and strictly highway I can't seem to even touch 16 mpg. That said, city's probably around 11. Given everybody's experience with their rides, does this seem like what I should expect for mileage on my TJ? If not, I can learn to live with it, but I just want to make sure that it's running the way it should. If so, what are your feelings on the Superchips and Hypertech (and whatever other existing programmers) for possibly tweeking the mileage a little? Even if I have to sacrifice worse city for better highway, might be worth it. Thanks for taking the time to read, and any information would be greatly appreciated, Thanks!

Welcome! Is this a 4 cylinder or 6?
The tires I'm going to guess are between 30-32's?
I was around 11-15 with a 3 inch lift and 32's (depending on how I drove of course)

I have a 6cyl, 33" tires, and a bank cat back exhaust with the 3spd auto trans. I get around 14 in combined driving, so your probably in the right ballpark. Also, FYI, dont waste any money on 'gas saving' parts for your jeep. They dont work.

Oh, and welcome!

Schmo 04-19-2010 06:34 PM

Yup sounds about right to me . . . If I get 14 MPG, I'm happy. I have 6 cylinder, 6 speed, with 33's, a 4" lift and a few hundred pounds of armor and gear.

Oh yeah . . . welcome aboard . . . how bout some pics?

Welcome to the forum and count your blessings. I have an o6 Unlimited auto and if I get 14 combined city and highway I'm happy. 13.5 is my average

I'v had my 02 tj 6 cyl 5 spd for 3 weeks Just filled up for the second time and got an even 19 mpg with both tanks . I was really suprised with those numbers .I would have been happy with 16 . The only thing I've added is one of those k&n look'n aircleaner with alun pipe.

Check your tire size, if your speedo gear wasn't changed according to your tire size then your speedo/odo are off, giving you false readings to calculate mpgs.

Welcome to the WF Bluemonster. You came to the right place. Learned a bunch already from the kind folks here. Great forum.

We recently bought a 6cyl 02 TJ. It has the optional 30" tires w/no lift and am getting between 16 & 17 around town. We're pretty happy with that.
Had all the oils changed and the tires rotated and balanced out. I also noticed when we bought the Jeep that it had one of those Jet Modules added to the ECU so I've been running 89 octane in it. Don't really know if that is helping or not.

Enjoy your new ride

I don't care what mileage my gets, as long as I'm having fun and going where no one else can go.

I have an '01 TJ 3 speed auto and i get around 10-15 mpg. I tend to get better fuel economy driving 40-50 than anything else. Once i hit 70 the rev's are already at 3k, i would think this wastes the most gas.

Welcome to the world of Jeeps! I also have a '98 Sport and love it! I usually average 20 mpg, depending on wind, etc. If you haven't already, I suggest you change out all fluids. I use full synthetic, and feel that by using the synthetic I get better mileage. I do know that when I switched to synthetic, the coolant temp dropped 10-15 degrees, and 5-7 additional pounds of oil pressure. It's also rare that the tach goes to 2500 rpm, I usually shift with the light. Have fun, that's what your Jeep is for!

Wow thanks for all of the replies and the warm welcome! Sounds like I shouldn't be too concerned then with my current mileage. Thanks InfernoGirl for the idea about the speedo, that's a good point, never really thought of that. To those who asked, mine is the 6-cyl auto by the way, I would imagine that the 3-speed auto would get slightly worse mileage than the 5-speed manual. To Schmo, I've got some pics that I will put up soon. I have many more questions in store, as I plan on doing a lot of work to my Jeep and I've always had great success with forums in learning anything I wanted to know.
