Is it really worth the money?

I'm sure I'll get a little beat up for this post, but just wondering if I'm the only one... I've wanted a Wrangler since high school, and finally last year, at age 37, I bought a brand new Unlimited. These Wranglers are alot of money, and I've got to admit, I'm a little disappointed. Here's why: the stereo sucks, the engine sucks, and every so often, I'll hit a bump while turning and get the "Death Wobble." Thank God neither my soft top or hard top leaks like so many others. If it wasn't a Wrangler, nobody in their right mind would pay 25-30K for a vehicle with these issues. If it wasn't for the 3 months of nice weather we get here in NY where I can cruise the beach with my top down, it wouldn't be worth it. Somehow, through it all, I love that damn Jeep. I still look out the window and can't believe I finally own one. I don't know what it is... but I'm hooked.

I have been wanting one since I was a little kid and have wanted a TJ since they came out in 97... I just turned 30 and got a 99, it needs stuff... but I love every second of driving it. Welcome to the club and remember to wave at every wrangler you see, CJ,YJ,TJ, and JK!

It's worth every penny to me!! I absolutely LOVE my 2010 Sahara...

I have no problem with the stereo, I like it for what it is....on the other hand, I do have MAJOR issues with the sound quality of satellite radio! SUCKS!!!! But, I'm hooked on it....I'll probably pay for a subscription once my year is up.

That's relative, you know.

The Land Rover rep (thank you, Sarah) let me take an LR4 through the rock garden at Overland Expo 2010 a couple of weeks ago; that thing costs a lot of money.
Back to back comparison: I'm glad I have a Jeep and think the LR is a laughable waste.

Apple to orange, of course.

A Wrangler is a Wrangler. Solid axles, big diffs, really quite basic but surprisingly refined for what it can do.
I consider it the biggest bargain of any vehicle that I've ever had (it's my 90th, btw; lots of company cars have been wasted on me...).

Enjoy your new ride. Work out the problems and build it the way you want.

sjlawr 05-02-2010 07:39 AM

I have owned quite a few used cars in the last 10 years. My wrangler though, is by far way more fun, and by far cheaper to maintain and upgrade than any of my last cars. I dont miss the "Corvette Tax", or the questionable quality of the Mustangs that I have had. By far the Jeep is the best yet.

So enjoy yours, as all of us here do.

OP- fantastic post, from a guy even farther north who doesn't even get beach rides :) Mark W.

That's not DW, it's bump steer. I eliminated that with an aftermarket sterring stabilizer for $45.

Guadzilla 05-02-2010 05:49 PM

daggo thank you for the tip. Sounds like a cheap and easy fix. I'll give it a shot. And I have to admit, it is alot of fun, especially in the warm weather. Thanks everyone.

muddigger94 05-02-2010 08:53 PM

you can go wrong with a jeep, this is my second YJ since i started driving and i love it . and it looks lik im going to have to take a ride to long island, i didnt even know u could get on a beach in ny with a jeep

phottomatt 05-02-2010 09:13 PM

36 and bought my first Jeep....2010 Sahara.....Don't know why I ever owned anything else. It's not fast, it doesn't corner great, and gets poor gas mileage, but take it off road and there is NO comparison, put the top down crank up the tunes and everything else fades to a blur except the Jeep driving the other way and I always wave. BTW the Wrangler has won at least 6 awards including government crash test, check them out at

If you have an Android phone, an I phone, or most any internet phone with internet service, you can get Pandora instead for $36 a YEAR. I have the dash mount in my Jeep where I use to have my sat radio (mine doesn't have it from the factory) I clip my Android G1 to it, plug in the charger and AUX cable and it is better than Sat radio IMHO.

Pandora Radio - Listen to Free Internet Radio, Find New Music

muddigger94 05-02-2010 09:19 PM

I'm glad to see you are having fun with it but you also have to remember ever since jeeps came out they were never ment for luxury granted they have gotten alot better even since the YJs in the luxury area but once you take it in a trail there is nothin that can compare.

N39-W120 05-02-2010 09:22 PM

Worth every bit of what I paid.....

DeanLinAZ 05-02-2010 09:34 PM

Come on folks--I was 74 when I got my first Wrangler. I'm lucky to still be able to climb up aboard, but it is the most fun per dollar I have ever had on wheels.

I've had cars that leaked, squeaked and vibrated and was disappointed. If my Wrangler does any of that (which it doesn't yet), it is just part of the ambiance of Jeeping. Have fun!

jcf 05-02-2010 11:42 PM

When you buy a Jeep you are not only getting a vehicle but a whole new lifestyle. Some have their problems but all makes of vehicles do

bigjay0512 05-02-2010 11:42 PM

Got my 2010 JK sport in January and have loved every minute of it!

Yea, but the sound quality from Pandora is just as compressed sounding to me...
Unless, is it any better if you pay for it? I've just used the free version in my old car....

I love the content of Satellite radio so far. In addition to music, I like the traffic/weather station, news, etc...(though it stays on the metal station 99% of the time! :punk:), it's the sound quality that annoys me...

jgano23 05-03-2010 09:24 AM

there really is not just one answer to that question. i think my jeeps are worth every penny that i have ever put into them, but that is me. there are some people that will drop 50K on a hummer (plus the cost downgrades... err, i mean "upgrades") and be 100% satisfied, but then they spend a fraction of that on a jeep and complain about gas mileage, noise, warranties, etc. idk, i like jeeps, and to me they are worth it.

KBR97 05-03-2010 10:15 AM

I think that may be a "run on" sentance as well.
Just saying...

I really like Slacker Radio. I have used both Pandora and slacker, Slacker sounds alot better.

You need a steering dampner for the wobble, make sure you fix it, it's only going to get worse. It's dangerous.

KBR97 05-03-2010 10:39 AM

Wow...I guess my phone likes to just randomly post things for me...

Bad sound quality on a metal station? Is that an oxymoron? :D

Sounds fine in my Jeep, I also listen to it at work on my computer, but usually very low volume there.

HA! Don't even get me started....!! ;)

I'm a musician....my ears are pretty sensitive to changes in sound quality, especially these days with MP3's, etc all over the place....music compressed at low bitrates loses SOOOO much sound quality on the high end it's not even funny, and satellite radio squashes the hell out the music/talk radio, all styles (acoustic music is especially vulnerable to lower bitrates, the high end disappears and it gets very dull sounding).

Oops..this is a Wrangler forum. Wrong place to talk about this topic! ;)

BEST CAR STEREO I HAVE EVER HEARD. It's all relative I guess, besides NO ONE will argue that it sounds better just cause its in a jeep. I'm used to a '97 Caravan and a '96 Taurus with blown speakers so I have nothing to complain about.
