TJ On The Road

I bought this 1997 TJ about a month ago. It had a salvage title so some work needed to be done. I added a 4" lift, 33" BFG's, replaced front right fender and fender flare, hood was bent up. Repainted hood, fender. Removed rust from left fender and drivers door and repainted. Painted all fender flares black. Had it inspected today and paid for new title and registration. It is now road worthy or off-road worthy. I will be installing a stereo and Herc-u-lining the tub on sunday.

Nice work! You cant even tell it was wrecked anymore. What's the story behind it? It looked and sounds like somebody rolled it.

nick50471 05-07-2010 06:49 PM

A local guy who buys builders picked it up at a salvaged auto auction in the Twin Cities. The Jeep was last titled in Illinois. Not sure why they salvaged it. I drove it home from his place. I traded a Benelli Super Sport shotgun for it ($2400). I have about the same in wheels, tires, lift, fender etc. The cop's only words during the inspection were, "wow, nice Jeep."

Those pics don't make it look any where near a total loss. Nice job fixing her up, always good to see one survive to take on more trails! :)

Kodysteeler43 05-07-2010 07:49 PM

you bought the jeep for $2400 or the gun itself was traded in for $2400?

nick50471 05-07-2010 10:14 PM

I own a gunshop. I bought the Benelli at my cost and traded it for the Jeep. The retail price of the Benelli is $2400.

Put a new stereo in on Saturday. That went much better than I thought it would. I removed all the monster cables from the previous owner and went with a simple system. Sony head unit, Alpine rear and front speakers. I like the Sony it has a front USB port that makes using the ipod easy. Now I can punish my girls with Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Finally received my bumper from Wild Built Fab in Yakima. We had some shipping issues. They arrived with no mounting holes drilled in them. Is this typical with custom bumpers? I located and drilled all the holes replaced the nasty Torx bolts with button head cap screws. Drilled and tapped the holes for the liscense plate and the fog lights. I will be mounting the rear bumper and swing out tire carrier tomorrow possibly.

Wow after looking at the picture I can see I need to blacken my head light bezels.

nick50471 05-24-2010 12:44 PM

I got the rear bumber and swing out tire carrier on yesterday.

great work man! I like that front bumper.

nick50471 05-29-2010 10:20 AM

After getting the body work done and driving it I ran into a few problems. I have had to replace a cracked thermostat housing, fan clutch, water pump and radiator. The fan shroud was also broken but have been unable to find a replacemnet. I repaired it using brass dog collar ID tags with rivets. It holds together quite well. I will replace it when I am able to track down another.

Wire brushed and painting the side mirrors today as per Stacy(wife). I told her we don't need mirrors because the doors should be off. She doesn't agree. So.......I paint.

nick50471 07-02-2010 03:03 PM

I added the full size spare and a set of Dirty Mudder seat covers.

Next up remove steps, add rock sliders, black out head light bezels and add a CB.

burton160w 07-02-2010 03:28 PM

Wow you did a hell of a job with that bodywork on the fender! Made it look like new :D The Jeep looks sick and those Dirty Mudder covers make me drool. One thing I'll quickly suggest is going to a dealership and picking up a bezel for the shift boot. They're usually about $17 and will clean up that part of the interior nicely.

baja 07-02-2010 03:35 PM

She's coming along nicely Nick, good job!

Is that bumper tied into the frame? And how's it lock up? Any rattling? I tried Wild Built fabs site, but it's been hijacked and isn't in the best of shape. They're local to me, so this bumper has me interested.

Ageless Stranger 07-02-2010 04:05 PM

Man you're Jeep is looking great Nick. :appl: That's good work you're doing there.

balleta 07-02-2010 05:02 PM

I think the guy who trade the Jeep for a gun should be using it to kill himself. :banghead:
Nice job
:punk:

They weld four 1/4"x4" C channel to the back of the bumper. I used the outside two and used the exsisting bumper mount holes on the frame.

The lock on the left rattled a little but a small piece of rubber glued in cured that.

:DI made out ok on the deal. He traded for a new Benelli SuperSport II. I am sure he would not have done it if he didn't think it was fair.

Cool, Thanks! Looks to be pretty beefy, and it doesn't look like it would be hard to add even more support if it was actually needed. Think a trip to yakima is in order.
