Best year for the I6?

I might have the chance to pick up a cheap I6 with AX15 tranny. This would obviously set my 4BT plans back a bit but hey a cheap power bump is what it is :-D

Are there any I6 gurus out there that can throw some advice my way? I would like to stick with fuel injection instead of backing down to a carburetor.

Will the AX15 and I6 bolt right in to replace my 4 banger and AX5?

Can the wiring harness and computer plug right into my gauges?

Any additional concerns I should have or thoughts to consider?

Thanks!

The 6cyl and AX15 doesn't just "bolt right in". That would require new frame towers for the motor mounts as well as different driveshafts. The tach. isn't compatible from a 4 to a 6, so that would need changed. the other gauges are the same, but you need the CPU and the ECM for the 6cyl motor.

Oh, and the best year for a 4.0L in a YJ is a 95, that's the first year they started putting in the H.O. motor. they are also available in the TJ's as well from 97 to 06. I believe the XJ from 94 to 99 had the H.O. motors as well. Not all of them were an H.O. motor though.

H.O. (high output) has a bigger throttle body on it, and a bigger exhaust manifold and down pipe, and has about 10% more torque and horsepower.

any particular way to know its a high output version if i find a 95 YJ, 97-06 TJ or 94-99 ZJ? Also, from redoing my dash i know that the tach, ODO, and idiot lights are all one piece. Should i seek out a YJ at the scrap yard and get that whole cluster?

The motors are hard to tell apart, If you see the side of the body, it will say 4.0L H.O. As long as the motor hasn't been changed. and its a 94-99 XJ, not a ZJ. ZJ was a grand Cherokee. That is 99 and newer.

Just the Tach. gauge is replaceable. it might unbolt from the dash as a 1-piece unit, but you can change the tach or speedo separately from that gauge cluster.

ALL 1991 to 1995 YJ's have the 4.0L putting out about 181 HP... XJ also got the HO version in 1991 as the new engine.. prior to 1991 the power was around 175 hp.. hope that helps ya...
