Has anyone upgraded speakers but.....

........kept the factory stereo??

I'm thinking about getting the upgraded tweeters and speakers from Quadratec but was curious if it made much of a difference with the stock stereo??

Thanks!!

I recently totally revamped my sound. I put a Pioneer FH-P8000BT head (Ipod control, BT phone connect, etc) Polk MM6501 Component spkrs, Polk MM5251 Compnonent spkrs, a JL HD900/5 amp (100WX5 currently 100WX4 200W to sub, JL 8W3 subenclosure/sub box. It sounds amazing. The amp is mounted underneath the drivers seat. the sub is in the back trunk and can be removed if needed. I had it prof installed with heavy gauge wiring. It sounds freaking awesome. I chose the polks b/c they will be in the elements more than the other speakers/amp and they are marine certified. I searched cruthfield.com and used their what fits function to design my system. I bought the componenents of the system off ebay and saved about 600-700 bucks. i can send you some sellers if you need them. Just my system I am sure there are others much better, but my wife and I are very happy with this one. The pioneer is a Double Din head unit and goes in looking like it was designed by Mopar to fit it. It act looks like a fact head unit it fits sos well into the dash. The blue matches led matches the seats in her white islander

x2!

First I replaced my factory sub. It was a little better with the factory head unit.
Then I just recently replaced my factory unit with a Kenwood KDC X994, thought about trying the double din, but was afraid it would end up looking like azz.

I personally loved everything about the factory unit, but could not keep a CD player alive in it. I went through FOUR units until I finally gave up and upgraded.

If you have the 7 speaker system in your Jeep now, there is an amp in with the factory subwoofer in the center console.
It does not play well with others. Once I changed my deck, I lost nearly all of the bass and ended up buying an inexpensive sub/8"woofer combo unit to put in the back.

Eventually I hope to replace the rest of the factory speakers. For now, I'm considering Kicker.

I did... for about a month. My wife and daughter surprised me with a new Sony Head Unit for Christmas, so I did an Upgrade. I was Happy with the Stock Radio, but HAPPIER, with the Sony!

(See my Sig for Upgraded COmponents & Brands.)

I had already upgraded my Speakers and added an Amp (didn't need a Sub, and still don't, with the Upgrades...). While the Stock RES Radio sounded GOOD after the Upgrade, it just doesn't compare to the Sony Head Unit. It's like a Night & Day difference in the two systems, using the same Speakers and Amp. The Stock Radio just can't handle a good load. While the Upgrade with Speakers and Amp sounded GOOD for the Stock Radio, the Sony Head Unit has now made it GREAT!

Best of Luck!

Cheers!

To answer your question, it will sound better then stock but you won't come close to the full potential of the speakers with a stock head unit.

You would probably get better sound with a new head unit pushing the stock speakers vs. a stock head unit pushing quality speakers. As long as your stock speakers are still in good condition.

When I upgraded, the dash kit ended up back order and had the speakers in (Kenwood 6 1/2) and they did sound a LOT better with the factory head. Biggest issue with the factory head for me was not playing CDs in the cold and not playing home burned CDs.

Still want to replace the dash speakers, but not sure my knee can hear the difference.

I think my only issue with upgrading the stereo would be having to purchase additional equipment in order to still have satellite radio. Cause most if not all after market satellite radio ready stereos need extra stuff.

The standard stock speakers are crap with any head unit, I changed all four 6-1/2" speakers with Mopar's kicker speakers, now I can listen to the radio with the top down 100% better. did not replace the tweeters yet.

My stock speakers don't sound bad at all even with the top off at highway speeds...yes, they could sound a little more clear, but they're audible and I can live with them.

As far as keeping the stock headunit and swapping speakers...I don't think you'd see much of a difference in sound quality. I'm sure there would be a slight difference at lower volumes, but the main problem you will have is your stock headunit just isn't gonna send enough power to the speakers for you to hear them at their full potential.
