CHROME vs. BLACK

Hi everyone. In a recent thread I was beat up pretty bad about my pro chrome comments, and had very little support from any other chrome lovers. So, I thought it would be fun to have a public vote on the issue. Simply vote for Chrome or Black whatever you prefer on a Wrangler and why. This includes wheels, bumpers, hinges, ect... Also, feel free to post pictures of some examples. Have fun with it everyone; at the end of the day it's all a matter of opinion!

Russ13 05-17-2010 10:26 AM

Here is the first Vote.

Dark color Jeeps = Chrome wheels and accessories

Lighter color Jeeps = Black

Well there is no poll..which makes the outcome of this vote harder to see (even though its obvious that the chrome guys will lose.)

I've never liked chrome, as a sports car guy, it adds unnecessary weight.

I have a Black Jeep, my Wheels are brush alum. (OEM canyons). My headlight rings are black.

Only chrome on my Jeep is the Grille mesh that was installed by a PO. I'd have preferred black, but not enough to paint it.

cavediverjc 05-17-2010 10:32 AM

Light colored Jeeps.....BLACK

Dark colored Jeeps.....BLACK

Chrome is for Civics.

My wheels are aluminum, but I'm considering having them powdercoated satin black. :D

TheTJRod 05-17-2010 10:34 AM

Well a mod will come by soon enough to add a poll I hope.

I to prefer Black. I think the only thing that should be chrome or rather aluminum/alloy should be the wheels. I painted my headlight rings black and swapped my alloy rims for black steeles, well partally because I go off road and taking nice "Expensive" wheels to get rock rash on is just.. stupid, yes I said it.

No chrome accesories... Period. Doesn't belong on a rugged vehicle. Though the stainless steel d-rings and snatch hook of a winch are ok

drivebytruckerz 05-17-2010 10:44 AM

I hate chrome.. The only Chrome that was on my Wrangler was the headlight bezels and I painted them flat black..

x2 on everything he said, haha.

Schmo 05-17-2010 11:15 AM

Black! I still have the shiney headlight bezels and do have polish alum wheels, but everything else is black . . . bumpers, rockers, etc. I've got plenty of chrome on my Harley . . . no need to bling out the Jeep.

InfernoGirl 05-17-2010 11:20 AM

Russ, Russ, Russ...... :D You truly are a glutton for punishment, aren't you????

Black is Beautiful Baby! :D

menchue 05-17-2010 11:35 AM

Once you go black, you never go back?

toshpate 05-17-2010 11:47 AM

prefer black but to be fair have stainless hood latches and brushed alum wheels. my black latches broke and rusted so I replaced them. on the CJ everything is black.-wheels bumpers rollcage, side steps etc. and it is light blue. but then it is wrecked :(

I don't really know what the right answer is for this topic, however like you said it all comes down to preference. So here is my view on the matter. I agree with you guys who said chrome for dark colored Jeeps and black for light colored Jeeps and my TJ is an example of that statement because it'is patriot blue with stainless bumpers and nerfs and various chrome and aluminum details. I think also what this comes down to is functionality. I know tht my TJ's chrome and stainless parts, for the most part, would not last as long as standard black parts would if I were out mudding everyday, but you know what? To me that doesn't really matter because my TJ is my daily driver so it isn't going to take the same abuse as a rockcrawler. So I guess what it all comes down to with me is that I love the way my TJ looks and how my personality shows through the parts I install and I'm happy with it.

Russ13 05-17-2010 11:51 AM

I know Inferno!!! I just hope this makes your day hahaha.

Vanimal00000 05-17-2010 12:14 PM

Black, A PO put Aluminum runners on my TJ. I am going to take them off when I lift it. I've got black steelies to replace my OE wheels that are Aluminum. Its just the way to go... Someone posted a pick of an all black out 4 door JK, which look bad a$$.

YAHAHA 05-17-2010 12:15 PM

As far as street Jeeps are concerned, I'm going with the OP on this one. Shiny (not necessarily chrome) on darkies & black on lighties. If you're doing any wheeling, chrome is definitely out!

My MIL's red Jeep is her DD & she never takes it off-road. It would look silly with black accents.

In the end, that's all that matters. :wavey:

I prefer a tiny bit of chrome, but not too much. The chrome should just be an accent and not mess up the whole vehicle -like Hummers. But that's just my opinion!

pokey 05-17-2010 01:08 PM

Right now black is the style of the times. In ten years who knows? When I had my '75 CJ5 I bent my front bumper and needed a new one. I personally prefer black. I liked the short front bumpers with the holes all along the front which were popular at the time. I searched high and low for a black or unpainted one and guess what ? They were only available in chrome. I even tried to special order an unpainted one. No dice. I guess I was ahead of the times back then. :D

davis_use 05-17-2010 01:12 PM

When I bought my TJ it had chrome wheels and hood latches...Both were quickly replaced with BLACK!

Just lookin at the bling-bling chrome made me think the thing should be
LOWERED not RAISED!!

McGridDLe 05-17-2010 01:17 PM

I prefer black. I have a red jeep and my wheels are polished alum.. but I think the wheels can go both ways.. as for accessories, its gotta be black.

jgano23 05-17-2010 01:17 PM

chrome is never good, imo.

lancetkenyon 05-17-2010 01:45 PM

Chrome won't get you home. But black will get you back.

Russ13 05-17-2010 01:47 PM

McGridDLe, from the small avatar pic I see your jeep looks really sweet. You mind posting a pic on this thread so we can get a better look??

AbbyK9 05-17-2010 02:33 PM

Chrome is for Hummers.

clear lake jeepn 05-17-2010 02:39 PM

Black!!

mogger7 05-17-2010 02:59 PM

chrome is for street rods (and hummers)

nmdriver 05-17-2010 03:46 PM

I'd go towards black on a jeep. Rims are an exception but thats about it IMO.

mcgyver1467 05-17-2010 03:57 PM

Black, but I have seen some set ups where chrome looks good. My personal opinion is that black looks meaner, and more aggressive. Chrome is a no go look to me.......

solman 05-17-2010 04:15 PM

Anytime I see a chromed out jeep, I think of that Chris Rock movie CB4. I you haven't seen it, it's good for a laugh.

As for me I prefer black wheels on my black jeep but I know that Russ knows this already.

joemd60 05-17-2010 04:40 PM

Black.
