If knowledge is power, there's lots of free info here to get knowledgeable.
Did you know there is a Chrysler Service Bulletin 09-010-04 REV. A out there called "4.0L Engine - Dirt And Debris Accumulation At Rear Main Seal" covering 1997 - 2005 Jeep TJ/Wrangler?
Following are some free sources of information (like the above) on repairs, bulletins/recalls, routine maintenance and sometimes, time estimates to carry out the work:
Library Information - General:
Your local Library subscribes to various data bases of information, some of those may be related to automobiles. Typically, using your Library card # and a Library password, you can access this information at home. It may be worthwhile checking with your local Library to see what they have available and how to access it from your home computer. For example, a local library nearest to me has access to the Chilton Library with data for maintenance, repair, and bulletins/recalls. I access it, at times, for info related to topics on this Forum. I like Chilton for its format, video clips and numerous pictures.
Library Information - ARRC:
If your library has access to EBSCOhost Databases, then go to the Auto Repair Reference Center (ARRC), and submit your vehicle model year and take it from there,
Try this site. "Click" on "repeat the search with the missing results included". The ARRC link should be available then. Click on it and take it from there.
Sometimes the site doesn't work that smoothly.
- If it asks for a number use 23456789
- If it provides a drop down list of libraries, use the one with "Hamilton" in it.
- If it gives you a page called Nova List Plus, or some other page that provides no useful information, click your back button, then click on EBSCOhost Databases. That menu will include an ARRC link.
Note: If info isn't there for your year / model, try another year or similar model.
Just looked up the following on the ARRC site regarding my 2003 Jeep TJ Sport. Actually I looked at the Wrangler site as it has more information on it.
The Service Bulletin is numbered 08-027-03 and applies to vehicles built between May 29, 2003 and June 19, 2003.
The only problem I have with mine is that the slider switch seems slow to slide back sometimes and makes a slight clunking sound. I lubricate the rod with synthetic brake lube and that takes care of it.
Here's what the ARRC site has about the engine:
