2001 Jeep Wrangler Sport

Alright, first off, I don't own a Jeep Wrangler, it's my girlfriends, but since I'm the one working on it, I figured I'd join and get some help along the way.

She owns a 2001 Jeep Wrangler Sport 4.0L with an auto (slush box).

I have a few projects for it, most of the information I already have/know.
Needs a new heater core.
Installing Cruise.
Just bought a hardtop, may make my own wiring harness for the wiper/defroster.
Needs a new pump for the windshield washer fluid.
And it shakes from 52-58 mph.

Otherwise it's in good shape running 31's.

I'll try to post pics later when I get home.

Now onto info about my ride. I own a 94 Chevrolet S10 with a 5 speed manual. Manuals are the way to go IMO, or at least a transmission with overdrive. I work on it constantly to make it better, never had any problems, but it was once a stock truck with zero options. Now it has everthing power except seats and mirrors.

I'm not new to forums, I'm on S10forum, but hopefully I can get the info I'm looking for over here.

Welcome! When you say it shakes, can you better describe it for us? How bad is it? It could be the death wobble.

I read the death wobble thread, but it only does it around 55 mph, anything above or below and it's fine, seems to be mainly at cruising speed also, not speeding up etc.. But it feels as if the front tires are out of balance since it shakes the steering wheel and everything. I read it may be a drive shaft out of balance, but not sure yet. The tires have been rebalanced and the jeep's had several alignments to no avail.

I've been searching the forum, but doesn't seem to be as much info on everything I'm looking for. Always seems like i'm doing a new project that's never been written about before.

I've had the same experience around 55mph. Can you push on through the wobble? When you get about 60 does the shakiness stop?

I recommend checking out the tires and alignment. For me, I installed new tires and checked the alignment and the problem was solved. Of course, about three years later, after my tread had worn down, the 55 mph semi-'Death Wobble' started again. New tires resolved the issue once more. I'd investigate your tires and alignment.

Check the torque on the lugs. 100lbs is about where they need to be.

Yes, it's only around 55, once I go faster, it stops and is smooth as can be.

I guess a bit of a story to the jeep.
It's my girlfriends, it was given to her when she turned 16, her dad bought it new for himself back in 01. It had a soft top on it up until recently because someone broke into it. They took a jagged object and started to cut the rear window (looks like a key mark). Then tried to pull the window up, tore some of the stitching in the process, finally the zipper was found partially unzipped. So they stole the radio, it was a 5 year old jvc bottom of the line stereo. They also stole the old gps in the center console. THe guy was an idiot, havent found him, but when saw what happened the next day, the window was down, but the door was locked. It appears he crawled out the window instead of opening the door. Since then, we looked for a hardtop and it now has a hard top on it for security reasons.

Everything on the jeeps appears to be fine, I've checked all of the ball joints, steering links etc... The tires are all on securiley. I assume the wobble is from the 31's with a slighlty agressive thread. It's just odd that it's only at 55 and not faster.
