I am having some issue with my 87 that seemed similar to yours. i am new to the jeep thing, what is a PCM?

And what are all these codes people keep talking about? does an 87 have codes?

the pcm is a very simple computor that controls the carburetor. the codes are a number that tells you what could be wrong with vehicle.

I'm not very good with your year jeep. but on the 91-95 you can turn the key from acc. to on(without starting motor) 3x leave in on position and the check engine light will flash. so you count flashes then look up on a code chart.

just asked friend with 89. no codes have to pin check. box under hood on fire wall, check voltage to pins. the pcu basically just runs the carburator, some minor ignition stuff but nothing like the newer cars.
