Upgrading Stock Sound System
I've got a 2006 TJ with a stock AM/FM/CD. I wan to to upgrade the sound system while keeping the stock stereo. I like the unassuming look of the stock stereo, and don't want to worry about thieves stealing a nice fancy looking aftermarket stereo.
As far as I can tell, the only speakers are overhead. I would like to possibly upgrade these speakers, add a subwoofer in the center console, and add some speakers in the dash.
1) Do I need an amp, or can I run all that from the stock stereo?
2) Any suggestions as to speaker sizes/brands?
Keep in mind I no not need bass you can hear a block away or window shattering sound. Just something that sounds nice with the top down at 55 mph. Right now the stock stereo just doesn't cut it in that situation.
i would replace speakers then add an amp. your limited by power a factory/aftermarket radio can do. as i tell people in my shop if you cant hear music like you would like now just replacing speakers does nothing bc your still running same power.
you can use factory radio would need a line level comverter, changes factory wires to rcas to feed a amp.
last thing i would do is add a sub. get the rest of system sounding good where you like it 1st. and then last add a sub & amp. i have a single 12" sub hidden in my YJ and about 150w rms on it..it's perfect for me, not crazy yet when i go down freeeway i can still jam and hear everything.
my YJ's system is
Memphis 4x6 = dash
Memphis 6-1/2" = doors (custom installed)
JL Audio 4" = sound bar
JL 12w3 = sub
Memphis 2004 amp = 4 channel amp. 2 channels on door/dash speakers, other 2 on sub, sound bar running off radio
how do you here it? 150rms? i run 150rms to my dash speakers in my '99.
i can easily hear it. i only have 1/2 power to it as well. i have 50w rms on my mids and highs.. i can drive as fast as i want w/ top off on freeway and still hear it all crisp & clean.
what amp are you running?
