how hard is it to put in a new radiator?
Ok, so my radiator has a leak... a very large leak... which caused some problems with my engine... So, since I know it needs a radiator, I am going to get one and go from there in the repair. I have two questions here.

ok, so I am getting the new radiator, a new water pump for it, and new upper and lower hoses. How hard will it be for me and my grandfather (we both have a little know-how with mechanical stuff) to put it in ourselves? I have a buddy that can put it in no problem, but the Jeep isn't driving right now and so we aren't going to tow it to his shop just to replace the radiator.

second... I was driving with a completely dry radiator the other day (which is why it won't drive) and something happened, dont know what. I am going to post a link on here to my other question describing what happened. But the question is what problems can happen from driving with a dry radiator? because I am hoping that nothing was damaged during my extravaganza the other day and it will be fine once I replace the radiator. (The Jeep is running, kept it in neutral, and RPM's were around 1000.)

here's the link describing what happened to my Jeep... please could use some help here

the instal should be no problem. as long as u take ur time, then it is something even the most mechanically challenged person can do. just remember to fill it back up with coolant.

the cool thing about cars(older ones especially) is with a simple set of tools, you can get a lot of work done.

ok, thanks! and I have noticed that! I have a set of wrenches, a screw driver, and a torx set and I can do almost anything on the Jeep!

You should be able to replace the radiator yourself, it just takes time and a little bit of your knuckle skin. The water pump is easy enough too, just make sure you put it back on properly so it doesn't leak.

thanks. We are going to put it in tonight. but i just dont know if there are other problems beyond the radiator that need fixing! I hope the radiator is the fix

truckerz you know what i am talking bout... you posted on my other thread regarding my messed up YJ! haha!

Here's a little write-up on radiator install.

Go ahead and do the thermostat too. It's cheap and easy. You'll be right there anyway after you get the water pump off. Make sure you clean all of the old gasket stuff off completely before re-installing the pump and thermostat. You need a good seal on it. It was my first time doing a water pump replacement and it went okay, except I didn't let the gasket sealant set up overnight, and I had to do it all over. If you use the sealant, read the directions.

I let my water pump set for about 16 hours overnight and it's fine. Also, after you take your old one off.. stuff a clean rag in the hole and scrape the old gasket off down to the metal so your new one will seal good. Use a razor blade scraper.
