Choosing a New Cell Phone

i have verizon and i am due for a new phone in june. i want a phone with a touch screen and a qwerty keyboard. anyone have any suggestions?

drivebytruckerz 05-27-2010 03:54 PM

My buddy sells Verizon and the Droid is supposed to be pretty awesome.. That's what I'm going to get next phone.

firehawk_1989 05-27-2010 03:58 PM

+1 for Droid, or the Blackberry Storm 2 (full qwerty, touch keyboard only)! Are you looking for a touch keyboard or touch screen with a physical qwerty keyboard?

either is fine. i have the samsung juke right now and i use T9 word to text. i am always sending unintelligible messages because i forget to proof read and make sure that it chose the right word.

I went down to buy a Storm 2 and I didn't like the feel of it. The screen click is odd to me. I checked out the Motorola Droid, and it was clunky to me as well. I landed on an HTC Eris, and I've been very happy. The Droid Incredible is a faster Eris. I believe all 3 are running the same OS, Android 2.1.

firehawk_1989 05-27-2010 04:06 PM

Yeah, the screen click is a bit strange, but you can get used to it. My bro has the Eris and loves it, if I got a touch screen I'd probably want that. Not a fan of the Moto Droid though, something about it just isn't right to me...

The iphone g3 is SUPER cheap right now, which means another model is on the horizon. If you don't mind last years model, you can pick it up for less than a hundred bucks.

i wish i could get the iphone, but i have verizon and that is only available through at&t.

pakman55 05-27-2010 05:13 PM

just one thing to say about the iphone and verizon. Normally id agree with a price drop, there is just a new model around the corner, however AT&T just sky rocketed the cancellation price for their Iphone service. This leads me to believe that it will be coming out for another carrier. I hear from a close friend at verizon (not a store at corporate) that it will be announced June 7. Im do for a new phone too and although the DROID is tempting, Im going to wait on the iphone. My .02$

ExDementia 05-27-2010 06:17 PM

I have the Droid Eris and its simply awesome.

Ray - San Jose 05-27-2010 06:31 PM

The current problem with the iPhone is that it can't multi-task. I can listen to streaming radio on my Eris while surfing the web, texting, or playing with the phone. I can also talk on speaker and surf the web to find information. Can't do that on an iPhone unless you jail brake it. The Droid also has an advantage of having folders that can be placed on any page, something else the iphone doesn't have. To be fair tho, the iphone does have a lot more apps than the android phones.

Chaz_155 05-27-2010 06:48 PM

iPhone is the only way to go! Wait alittle longer!

jgano23 05-27-2010 08:02 PM

i only have the minimum internet package, so i won't be surfing the net unless i need info in an emergency. i am really liking the droid eris, but the iphone is sweet too. i am really leaning towards the droid, though. it's $79.99 and i really like the features.

Droid ftw

drivebytruckerz 05-27-2010 08:20 PM

I don't like any of the "i" products.. they have an internal battery and WHEN it goes out they'll say.. "well, it'd just be as cheap to buy a new one." Total scam.

if it comes to Verizon it has to have a removable battery. It a requirement for ANY phone on their network for that exact reason.

joemd60 05-27-2010 09:45 PM

Go with Android whether it be the Eris or Droid, Android is quickly making it's way to the top of the ranks. But your choice depends upon whether or not you like the touch or physical keyboard, BB makes a nice device if you are looking for a physical keyboard, to which I have on ATT.
T9 is becoming a thing of the past now that a lot of phones have the qwerty keyboard, also bear in mind the Android and BB are considered smartphones and require a smartphone connect plan.

jgano23 05-27-2010 09:48 PM

i am heavily leaning towards the Eris right now. i'll have to go to the vz store to check it out.

Good luck jg, the Eris is a nice device. Look at the packages closely, there are some good deals where you can get unlimited text and web plus your talk minutes.
Or in your case, depending how many texts you send you can get a minimal package with an allotted amount of web and text.
But again keep in mind Android is a smartphone, so use it to it's full capabilities, you won't be disappointed. Keep us posted.:)

I just want to add my $.02 in here... I don't have any of those fancy phones, though my phone (Samsung Alias) does at least have the world's tiniest QWERTY keyboard...

However, I would avoid any phones that only have a touch keyboard... my dad has a Blackberry Storm and I've used it a few times for texting. It's very difficult to text on...you're constantly bumping the wrong buttons if you've got even slightly larger fingers. It catches some of the errors and will pop up word suggestions, but it doesn't always figure out what you were trying to say...which can be a real PIA. I also have heard nothing but good things about the Droids. Seems like the HTC phones are really popular as well.

iphone is nice...but it's way more than most people need, plus you gotta pay for a data plan on it to take full advantage of its features as far as I'm aware.

I agree with the touch keyboard, I have small fingers and that was why I got rid of the iPhone. With any smartphone you have to get a data plan, that's why you have to see what your intentions are with the phone, so as not to be wasting money.
I have the BB Bold with ATT, and I like the idea of not having to write everything down on paper for reminders, I keep my grocery list on the phone, important events, appointments, and birthday's.
Those are some of the nice things about having a smartphone, but again everybody has their own needs.

jgano23 05-28-2010 08:12 AM

DAMMIT!!!

ok, so new plan. i thought we had the data plan that supports the smart phones, but apparently not :banghead:. so smart phones are out (ie: droid and iphone). i thought the $9.99 data plan supported them, but only the $29.99 plan does :banghead:. i am so NOT going to pay an extra $29.99 a month for unlimited internet on my phone. so these are the new choices:
samsung reality
lg enV touch
lg chocolate touch

s3nt3nc3d 05-28-2010 08:21 AM

Go with the enV Touch...if it's anything like the enV 2, it's a pretty good phone and I see it's got a REAL qwerty keyboard.

I bought my Alias thinking the smaller keyboard would be better, but with big fingers, it's hard to type on it plus my buttons are wearing off and even with it being tiny it's STILL too big to text one handed like when driving or busy at work (yeah yeah...new topic entirely, don't start it here...lol). I regret not getting the enV 2 which had a larger keyboard like the enV Touch has.

Edit: Well the Samsung Reality looks pretty similar to the enV Touch...so I'd say one of those...I'd just look up reviews and see which one has less annoying bugs and seems to not fail as quickly.

DROID!!! Just make sure u get insurance on it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OSUJEEPER 05-28-2010 08:25 AM

HTC Incredible, the best phone out there on verison at the moment. The Android software is awsome. It can be linked with google and facebook. IMO beft phone verison has. I wish I had it. I have the HTC Eris, the Incredible's little brother. I love my Eris and the Incredible is just better then the Eris in every way.

O look at the site to get some info on Android software and phones.

Iphone 4.0 is definitely in the end stages of development.

It has been rumored for over a year that Verizon is getting the Iphone...If its going to happen, june-July is the perfect time for it.

Why July? Well that's when Apple usually brings out the new iphones....

I'm an iphone nut......I have a 3G. am waiting to upgrade until the 4.0 comes out....the 3G S wasn't a big enough of an improvement to pry my $ out of my hands.

EDIT - just read your last post - I have no idea between those three.

firehawk_1989 05-28-2010 09:54 AM

I know you said no $29.99 data plan. But I kinda thought the same thing, but once I got my Blackberry I was hooked the first day, and the data plan has been WELL worth it. I couldn't go back to a non smart phone, I love my apps and freedom too much!

This isn't true....at all

I listen to music while doing other things on my iphone 3G... We can also surf web/text/play a game while you talk on speaker phone...not sure where you got your info, but its wrong. Also not sure what you mean by folders....but on iphones you can move all the different apps to different pages.

My iphone is also synced up with my gmail account so I can do emails on the go. etc. It cuts down on the texts I use, since I don't have any friends, and the only people who would text me are my family, they all have iphones as well and usually just email me.

Jgano - the extra cost would be 20.00 a month, not 29.99 since your already paying the 9.99....I know it doesn't matter, but I thought I'd point that out. I never thought I'd use my iphone 1/2 as much as I do. I use it for everything. I'm curious about something google app. or internet search. I want to know where something is. Internet, or Maps.
games out the wazoo while I'm at work, and not working. or while I'm in the grocery store line. Heck you can surf the web while you drive!!! (yes, you CAN, but I don't advise you to try.)

I have a friend that went from the iphone to one of the ATT phones that uses android's OS. He loves it. but he's very "ANTI APPLE" so I take his words w/ a grain of salt...he loved the old startac phones 5 yrs after everyone else moved on. My iphone has put up w/ more abuse than any phone I've had. I got it shortly after the 3g came out, and its held up nicely. Much more than I can say for any motorola I've owned...

firehawk_1989 05-28-2010 10:13 AM

mrcarcrazy said it. You will use it much more than you think, no matter what smartphone you get. I'm glad I'm not the only person who loves being able to google random things that I wonder about on my phone!

AbbyK9 05-28-2010 10:41 AM

I suppose I am the only person on this forum who uses her cell phone for a phone's original intended purpose ... making calls. I even have text messaging turned off on it. ;)

But I have heard a lot of good things about the Droid.
