cj tailgate = yj tailgate????

i found a tail gate for my jeep but would the cj tailgate work on it??

schnutzy 06-03-2010 01:04 AM

it woulf require a bit of modification. the cj tailgate and the yj tailgate are very different in the way they open.
the cj tailgate opens down like the tailgate on a pick up, where the yj opens out.

if you could make that work it would be cool as he**. If you do patent them and I will be the first to buy a lay flat tailgate off you!

Yes they do make a kit I have seen them they look cool on the yj's

CMEvans79 06-03-2010 06:09 AM

They look cool on TJ's too... The CJ tailgate is the best looking tailgate made for these jeeps.

ENIX89YJ 06-03-2010 09:43 PM

so go for it??

89PBR96 06-03-2010 09:48 PM

but i don't wanna pay 160$ for something that i can make?....

CMEvans79 06-04-2010 12:05 AM

Then make it! It will be the way you want it! Go for it! ... TAKE PIC'S ALONG THE WAY!!

ENIX89YJ 06-04-2010 12:08 AM

will do i have to get ahold of the guy to arrange to pick it up... the reason i am needing a new one is because a telephone pole jumped in my blind spot and i was backing up and boom.... it hit the spare tire and dented the tailgate in.... i was sooo aggravated at that stupid pole... couldn't it see i was backing up??.. lol.. welp live and learn

CMEvans79 06-04-2010 12:14 AM

I would contact the person you are supposed to get it from so that you can get a hold of it ... and install it ... I HATE it when inanimate, permanent objects jump out in front of or behind me!

ENIX89YJ 06-04-2010 01:22 AM

yeaa... i had a hill side do that before in my car i had... roads were wet+bald tires... don't mix.... at all

rogertc1 06-04-2010 04:55 AM

I got a replacement YJ gate for mine at a junk yard for $50 after I backed into a fence. I Even cracked the old gate. Repinted it and hung it. Had very little rust at the bottom. Left the tire off.

CaptLee 06-06-2010 12:11 PM

i heard or read some where a CJ7 tailgate will work and that all you need to order or find is the hinges and the locking plates for the hooks. heck it might of been in 4wd or quad catalog. i read so many of them. I am thinking about it when I repaint mine in the near future. The gate in the catalog is around 156.00

ENIX89YJ 06-06-2010 09:47 PM

yeaa i seen them... they even look better

ENIX89YJ 06-08-2010 01:07 AM

so will a cj5 tailgate work???? the other one was already gone...

Geoff@Bestop 06-08-2010 09:37 AM

I'm pretty sure that a "newer" CJ5 tailgate will be same size (after 76).

But remember that if you swap to a fold down tailgate, not only will you need to do some fabrication, but you've lost the ability to easily open your tailgate. There was a reason why they changed to side opening gates. Your life will be a lot easier if you get a YJ gate. There have to be a few around in junkyards.

ENIX89YJ 06-08-2010 10:53 AM

thanks and there aren't any around in junkyards here.. unless i go to the jeep junkyard and pay twice the price of a new one...
