Towing my Jeep Scares the CRAP out of me!

So I just did my first test tow around the block a couple times and it scared the crap out of me. Even with safety chains Every bump I hit sounds like its going to pop off the hitch and plow into me.

Statistics:
The Jeeps being flat-towed by a 1992 Chevy Tahoe
Transfer case in in Neutral
Transmission is in 3rd gear

Do I have any thing to worry about or is it just me?

And I did upgrade the hitch height heres the before and after

are you pulling a 2" hitch on a 1 7/8" ball?


There has got to be slop somewhere to feel it bump into you like that. If your running 2" and 2" (should say on them) then check the other side where it hooks to the jeep and see if there is a way to shim it/strap it/whatever to lock it down with no play.

You have no tongue weight on the hitch. Of course it is going to feel like that.

My vote would be A. buy a trailer or B. rent or barrow one.

Either option is cheaper than replacing the jeep when it comes off that flat tow setup.

I tow my Jeep all the time for 300 miles at a time. Make sure the ball is the right size and is tight and the tow bar level as you appear to have done. I tow mine behind my motor home and can not even tell it is back there. I also have a brake buddy system to activate the brake pedal in the Jeep for additional safety braking.

Maybe I don't see it in the pictures...do you have chains with that setup?

Agree w/ Andy...bet you have little to no weight on that ball...

most hitches have a way to adjust the part where the ball goes into the hitch to tighten or loosen the gap/space around the ball .
if yours has this adjustment that might be all you need to do.

Ok, so the ball and hitch ate both 2", I do have the adjuster nut tightened to the right spot, and the hook ups on the jeep are impossible to move or jiggle any.

I do have chains, they hook up from the tahoe's hitch to my little stinger hoops (that thing isn't coming off unless the frame comes with it ;))

Any time I've ever towed anything, if I had a problem it was because the item being towed angled downward from the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle. I don't know if that would have anything to do with this jeep tow. I just think I would would want the tow-bar attached to the tow-car rising uphill rather than downhill as the picture shows. You think??:confused:

:cool: Heh Heh, I've never towed a jeep before Kevin, although 30 years ago, we'd tow a modified Bronco--to race off-road, but I have towed various size trailers and now, my off-road trailer

Towing a SHORT WHEELBASE jeep is a lot tougher than towing a single axle trailer-

The Level tongue requirement is a "Necessity" for the ball type hitch because of the LIMITED range of vertical movement allowed in the ball hitch attachment and the (leveler)?, the tongue, the better and less noisy it SHOULD tow, so you're probably right

If I ever had to tow a jeep, I would either use a Pintle/Lunette (military), a Lock & Roll or one of the new Max coupler hitch's from Adventure Trailer--

The Lock & Roll (mine) and the Max Coupler are NOISLESS and will take more Angles and Dangles than the Military Pintle/Lunette and like I said are NOISLESS, but even the hitch pins-make noise and they make noisless hitch pins !!

The ball hitch is probably 6/8 hundred years old (:rofl:) so I'd recycle it as scrap metal !!

Also, I have never understood how you can flat tow a vehicle without a driver in it too. Do you lock the steering and just let it bind up in the turns or what?

You only lock the steering wheel if you're towing the vehicle from the rear-

Towing from the front, as long as the "lock" mech is not engaged, will allow the vehicle to "follow" the tow vehicle because of its steering CASTER --just like there was a driver onboard !!

I had a '93 wrangler 4-banger a few years ago I bought and towed it with the same type hook-up about a hundred miles with my GMC pickup and it towed fine.

The book will tell how it is to be geared (neutral- 4wd and don"remember if it's supposed to be in 3rd) and the key turned so the steering wheel is in the "unlocked" position and it will follow the towing vehicle. The book will tell you how the transmission is to be set.

If you don't unlock the steering wheel and try to tow it would be rather exciting!:eek:

I have towed mine behind the motor home for thousands of miles, just double and triple check everything, use safety chains, check all your connections every time you stop...

would it help at all to load heavy stuff into the jeep??? From what Im reading, the lighter weight/shorter wheelbase is a lot of the issue. ...just a thought for the trip.

Adding weight won't do anything to help the situation. The tongue of the flat tow bar isn't riding on the hitch ball the way it was designed to. You should have ample amounts of tongue weight so the tongue sits on the ball.

You shouldn't solely rely on the catch to hold the trailer on the tow rig. Cause it will break off and your tow setup will leave your tow rig. Even stock car trailers are designed to put a load on the tongue when you are empty.

:D No I don't think that would help much, a light truck towing a short wheelbase jeep with a SHORT towbar--is gonna be trouble, probably should get a dolly. like yj-gen-says

The RV towing is different, like an ocean liner towing a dingy

It's not a good practice for regular use, most race orginizations use trailers, not just because of having the money, but because that way--the jeep/car towing is trouble free-so

Vaultzz doesn't say if this is gonna be a regular situation or a one of--act accordingly !

I understand that the bar should be level and thats the highest lifted hitch I can find.

As for the weight on the hitch ball itself, would bolting on a tool box or something similar and filling it with a couple hundred pounds of crap help?

I'd like for it to be my regular tow situation for my monthly trail rides until I can get a legitimate trailer

And its not a very light truck that I was towing it with. Its a:

1999 Chevy Tahoe
Wheel Base: 117.5 "
Curb weight: 5,500 lbs (which is more than double the Jeep)
5.7 L V8 :punk:

Is this trailer capable of holding the jeep? it doesn't have a load capacity.

Adding weight to the hitch is like putting a band aid on a bullet wound.



The only problem I see with that trailer is the 70" width inside the rails. Have you measured the track width on your jeep to verify that it will fit?

Thats a light truck, hell the JK 4dr's are close to 4500lbs-

I'd Craiglist for a trailer, or buy a dolly

The race Bronc, I towed years ago was stripped and down to about 2800lbs, but we used a LONG tow bar, with a Pintle/Lunnete hitch to tow it with one of my Dodge Ramchargers

If I was you, I'd do some research in some Baja racing or off-road racing forums or "GOOGLE" "jeep towing"and get some advice/ideas on towing that jeep like you've got it
