right size for the job

Hey all. So I was gonna wait until the stock tires on my 2010 Sport Unlimited wore out to get some more beef, but I don't think I can hold out that long. I want to get a 32inch tire w/ the Cragar Soft 8s because they're super cheap and i think they look sweet.

Question is: How wide of a tire should I go with if I don't want it to stick out of the stock fender flares too far? Maybe stick out like 2 inches on each side?

I am not planning on getting new fender flares, but I do plan on doing the TF 2" leveling kit before adding these tires/wheels.

I would be curious as well

With 32's I would go with a 10.5 wide.

jonesz 06-18-2010 06:57 PM

A lot will depend on the back spacing of the wheel you get. The stock tire is about 10.5" wide but the stock wheel has over six inches of backspacing. A LOT of people are running 12.5" wide tires with aftermarket wheels at 4"-4.75" of backspacing, which sticks the tire out of the fender a little. The reduced backspacing is more for clearance issues inboard of the tire, but it looks cool, too.

I'm running a 12.5" wide 35 on wheels with 3.75 backspace. I'm out 2" from the fenders.

If you like that look, get 33/12.5. Then some wheel spacers or new wheels.

If you push out skinny tires it might look funny.

^^I like that. Can you not get a 32" tire in 12.5"? Also, the stock tires on a 2010 sport, are they 31"?

There are several "stock" tires. The "standard" tires are 29" on 16" wheels. There are 2 "optional" tires that are both 32" on 17" wheels. The Sahara comes "stock" with 32" tires on 18" wheels. If you have the 16" wheels, you can upgrade to the 17" and 32" tires pretty inexpensively if you look around. there is a guy right now on the Baltimore CL selling a set of wheels and tires for $600.

:doh: Then you already have 32" tires you numbskull! :D Take a look at the sidewall and see if they say 255 75R 17.

CapptainObvious 06-21-2010 12:57 PM

haha i can't remember what the numbers were on the side, but when i measured it it looked to be about 31 or so.

the reason i posted is because i want to get new tires and new wheels and don't want them to stick out too far. my bad.

JIMBOX 06-21-2010 01:05 PM

:rolleyes: All 32" tires measure 31"+ when installed, all 33" tires measure 32"+ when installed (except mine)

Advertised sizes don't really mean squat, when you vary the wheel width and jeep weight (tires installed) !!

:rofl::rofl: JIMBO

CapptainObvious 06-21-2010 01:55 PM

Can I put a 12.5" tire on these?

Cragar 3977850P Cragar Black Soft 8 397 Series Wheel

5" backspacing
16x8

JIMBOX 06-21-2010 02:32 PM

:cool: Yea, but with that much backspacing you will need spacers on all wheels, should be 4/4.5" backspace, 5" is a little to much for that wide a tire !!
Even then, with a 32" tire, you might get a LITTLE rubbing, on street, it all depends on the tie MFG

:rofl::rofl: JIMBO

CapptainObvious 06-21-2010 02:44 PM

Ok. Thanks. I think I'll keep looking for wheels w/ less backspacing and maybe go with a little narrower of a tire then.
