driving ny to nc, whats best route?
I'm leaving long island ny and headed to raleigh durham, nc. I'm semi tired of the I 95 route. I was thinking of taking the route to the bay bridge by virgina beach to try a more senic route. This according to google adds about an hour and a half of time and 50 more miles. I figure I might save time by dodging the mess that is baltimore, washington dc, and fredricksburg with this route. I will be driving this Sunday. Is this a good idea? Any recommended lunch spots?

I am originally from the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Take 95 until you get to the Delware Bridge and then take 13 or 1 south along the shore all the way to Virginina. Will end up going across the Bay tunnel. Stop in the middle at the welcome center and have a crab cake. Easy trip.

x2 rt 13
drove rt 13 many time, norfolk to nj always enjoyed bay bridge. if you really want to go out of your way and have plenty of time to spare you could go LIE tp clearview expessway to cross bronx express "trafic shouldn't be too bad early on sunday, go over gwb to rt4 to 208 to 287 south to 78 west to harrisburg. Can't remember rt numbers from there, used gps, but you cut down to west end of md. to west va "pass james madison college" then into the carolinas. the advantages are lots less traffic, very seenic ride. disadvantage is time and miles. I took this route to fla. maney times. depends on where in sc you are going if you should consider this. As i've said, can't remember the route you take off of 78 but gps will do it for you, worked for me. have fun

X3 on rt 13. Drive it once a year down to OBX. Much more senic and relaxing route

Google Maps, secondary roads... or scenic routes. Much more interesting than the interstate... :) Have a safe and fun trip!

I95 is hell :firedevil:

Anything but that route, lol

They have been building an express bypass on 95 just north of Baltimore for the past couple of years. Currently it's a real mess. It would be a good idea if you could avoid it during peak times.

looks like I will take 1 to 13 through delware to the bridge, then cut accross to I-85 and take that to chapel hill, which is my destination.

The tolls are gonna be a lot but there ain't much i can do about it, plus i want to drive accross the bridge at least once. I figure I'll stop at the pier as suggested and take a nice picture of the jeep and stuff down some food. Any speed traps, or anything I need to know about so I can avoid getting a coupon? There shouldn't be much traffic because it will be a sunday right? Lastly, ez-pass is accepted on the bridge right?

My favorite east coast N/S road is the Blue Ridge Parkway; I'll happily go out of my way to drive it.

From the DelMarVa area, we took US-58 once and it was a nice drive. Lots of speed traps though.

Haven't been out to the blue ridge yet, but would be way way out of the way considering my start and end points. I plan on hitting that after my mil training is done.

I've driven from Florida to NY via the BRP several times.
It's not the destination; it's the trip that counts. :D

If its mil training, you should be getting reinbursed for the drive, if so i'de def take advantage haha

x2 on the Blue Ridge Parkway. I live here in NC and the BRP is really nice. My girlfriend and I go driving in my jeep all the time on it. Plus if you pack a lunch there is many places where you can stop to eat and just enjoy the scene. If I had to travel a different route that would be the way I would go.

Take a look at this you should be able to find a good place to take a lunch break.

Aw don't take Rt. 13 through Bristol, PA. That route sucks anytime of day. Seriously though, get a TomTom and then pick Avoid Highways. Never steered me wrong. I took it from Buffalo to Burlington, NJ, and it was one of the best drives I've ever been on. All through the mountains. Windmills. I got to avoid the Thru-Way and ended up even saving a few minutes off the trip.
