milage

Need help figuring out how many miles are on my jeep.

rickow1 02-15-2014 10:19 AM

Are there any other details you can provide? Maybe odometer reading and/or year. Is there something wrong with the odometer that leads you to believe it's not correct?

Sorry. Internet cut out so I couldn't finish it. My odometer says about 77500 but my speedo is about 5 miles off. Its an 01 tj stock 4.0

The most accurate way is to cut it in half and count the rings. Sorry could not help it

sorry to say this but depending on which gears are in it, which gears came from factory, which tires are on it and all tires it has had on it, and what speedometer gear it has now that is you looking at me and guessing how many kids I have...you might be right...but need more info probably info not readily available with out asking questions of PO and KNOWING what has been done to it when.

I KNOW my mileage on my '04 TJ is "off" because I ran 31"s for 7 years without changing anything from the factory and it came on 29"s. In addition to that I went to 33"s and drove for 2 years before I regeared. After I regeared I FINALLY changed the speedometer gear to match gears in the tranny, and tires. I know it is off but the question is how much?

5 off at what speed? How long has the speedo been off?

Use highway mile markers to measure. For example, if you travel 1.05 on the measured mile, and assuming that it's been that way since mile 1, then the math is 77,500 / 1.05 = 73,810

Telor 02-15-2014 12:50 PM

All speeds.

Telor 02-15-2014 12:51 PM

And since igot it.

wwch99tj 02-15-2014 12:54 PM

Its not off 5 at all speeds... its off x percentage, unless it reads 5 sitting still?

Ex: 5 off at 50 would be 10% difference...

What size tires does it have?

Are you trying to figure out how many miles your odometer would read if the speedometer was accurate?

Do us all a favor and spend a few minutes writing an actual question that makes sense. A paragraph's worth of information would be helpful.

Calculate the milage variance, not the mph variance.

All you need to do is post up the mileage where you changed tire size. And if you changed gears post that up too, also helps to know what transmission you have. You can figure it out with an online calculator, but that's only assuming your tires are an exact measurement. Post up the size of the tires as stated on the side walls (before and after). Your dealer can alter your odometer, but why would you want that? Your bigger tires are feeding you a lower reading, but with any of the above info you can fix the problem of the speedo being off.

Also need to know at what speed the 5mph difference is seen. And if you can also find the speed difference when your jeep says 70.
