1991 Islander about to buy please help
I am about to buy a 1991 Islander for little of nothing. It seems to run ok, however, the carb is being held open with an ink pen. If I take the pen out it won't start. Can someone help me understand what's going on and what it will take to make this right?

Other than that the Jeep is in great shape and has no rust and runs good.

welcome to WF!

if you're getting that good of a deal off of it, i think it would be good to get it and fix that ink pen problem lol. where is the pen stuck in? the butterfly under the air cleaner? thats weird, i've never seen that.

got pics?? is it a 4cyl or 6? manual?

good luck!

1991 Islander
I'm new to this carb thing, the oldest truck I had before this had a TBI. The pen is stuck in the top of the carb holding open the fly (small round thin metal piece).

Will it hurt the engine to run it open? The air intake is not currently attached.

Any ideas on what needs to be fixed?

It's a 6cyl man trans.

Welcome to WF! Just a thought "that carb sounds like is seen better days" and also being that u got the Jeep for dirt cheap, I think u should just replace the carb n abracadabra your problem's solved.

Is it a felt tip or ball point? :D

It's holding the choke open im sure. If it runs okay now it will be a pain in the winter...see if you can run across someone here on the forum that can supply you with the choke linkage pieces. Most guys ditch the factory carbs around here so you should be able to get some parts. Post up a picture so we can see what color ink....i mean what carb you have.

sounds to me like they are holding the choke butterfly open with the pen check the electric choke coil ti see if its broken if it is you gan get a new one from youn local carquest or get a webber conversion it works well but you need to find a vw guy in your town to help you tune it correctly
