Best mod I've done so far...

So far the best modification I've made to the interior of my '97 TJ was to rhinoline the bed. I bought 2 quarts of Dupont's top line bed liner from Meijer for about $30 per quart. Removed the carpet, rear seat belts and rear seat. I was able to get away without removing the front seats. Sanded / scuffed everything, wiped it down with alchohol and brused on 2 coats of bedliner. I love it and it was very cheap and easy to do. It really changes the appearance and makes it much more durable. I only used about 1/4 of the second quart so I have plenty left for touchups. Sorry I don't have any pics of it yet but will try to post some.

I want to rhino line the interior but i also like the color of the paint on the inside. I also think that it would be a little rough on the feet. im always barefoot when im out wheelin we go muddin then go swimming in the bluehole. also have a kid on the way so when he can walk i dont want him scruffin up his feet..

come on people i always see TJ interior mods but cant find any YJ mods. They can get a thread going why cant we?

Coyote_94YJ 06-28-2010 07:42 PM

Rhinoliner is fairly smooth and wouldn't be hard on bare feet,....Herculiner on the other hand is fairly abrasive.

the output shaft is pretty awesome we had something like that in my old 68 bronco we had a chewed up spider gear that was pretty much rounded so we decided to make use of it..

You're not the first person to. I think one of the neighborhood kids walked off with that one. I took it off for something and set it aside and a day or so later I went to put all the parts back together and it was gone.

TTT anyone else?

Kate 06-29-2010 03:35 PM

From what I saw in the original pictures, you could start by neatly tucking away those wire birds nests you have in there. If nothing else, get some wire loom and black zip ties and move it so that the wad is under the seat and all you have is a little loom showing. Mount it up along the base of the console.

Then how about a nice conversion kit for a full roll cage.

If you're going to do diamond plate, then how about a piece behind the stereo and heater controls to hide the rough cut edges. If you can get it, something that would cover where that switch came out of the driver's side and left a big hole.

It's all in the details..

them wires are all gone it was from the previous owner he had a system in here..
the only wire that i have is the aux cord for the ipod.

I would do a full roll cage if this was my wheeler only but its my daily driver. I Wheel this not to often. When i do we have fun. I might get another early bronco for my trail vehicle, but for now i have the jeep and i want some cool things in it.

What do you mean with the diamond plate? i dont understand, can you explain to me better please? i dont think i will be dong the diamond plate pedals either.

i will be getting camo seat covers and floor mats!

I'm turning all of my interior fabric to black right now with fabric dye/spray; duplicolor makes some good stuff. Did my visors and look brand new. Doing the doors, center console, and seats soon hopefully.

You can always Monstaline the interior with a similar color.

correycinciyj 09-27-2011 08:50 PM

not done yet, still in the middle of my rebuild but im herculining my entire interior and also doing a custom dash. mine looks like crap. im going to get all new guages and im using diamond plate for it though. diamond plate will also be used for the shifter cover plate and the tailgate slide plate. i think it will look sick with the new guages as well as all the switches and a head unit for the radio. love the cat yj man.

It varies. Some were taken in Wichita KS and some where taken in England. I had just enough lift to drive across the Atlantic. lol. I sold that jeep just before I moved back from England.

Thanks. It wasn't very hard to build. The wiring was a PITA though.

Wranglerkangaroo 09-28-2011 05:11 PM

So about the dash does anyone here have a schematic or bluprint of the dimensions that that will be needed to do all of that. I mostly want to know where the holes for the gauges will be drill at, Im not good at making lines straight enough to line all that up

if u get rid of the entire frame under the dash that the guages actually bolt to then you can just put them anywhere you want as well as add any and make it look good. make it your own.

Question!

Coyote_97TJ,
I am in the middle of putting together a custom flat dash as well! Just a couple questions about your old dash!
I really like the texture that your dash had, and that is exactly what I had in mind!
How exactly did you go about doing it? Is it aluminum? Clear coated?

What gauge/thickness of metal did you use?

And roughly how far does that top lip of your dash stick up in that crease of the windshield, like where it hinges, underneath that rubber cowl seal. How far in did it stick? And did that cause any issues with that hinge area or did it just make the seal tighter?

Thanks for your help!

Ha ha ha, That was back when I had a slight identity crisis. Changed usernames a couple times. lol

Sorry I didn't see your post sooner. I'm not on the forum as much as I used to be. Life, family, and the military keep me away more so these days.

Well, lets see if I can remember it all. That was about 2005 or 2006 when I made that dash. It is aluminum and I believe the thickness was around .065" or so. Somewhere in the 1/16" thick area. To get that texture I bought a palm type random orbit sander from Sears and got some sandpaper (220 grit I think) and sanded it down real good. Then I put on a couple layers of clearcoat. The bend/lip that goes between the tub and windshield frame doesn't actually go in between. It did at the beginning but the final product worked best with it gone which I'll explain in a bit. I bent it and later cut it off but left just enough to make it look like it curves in. At the most it goes in a half inch but I wanna say it was more like a quarter to three eighths of an inch. Whether you cut it off or not it should work just fine. When I had it built originally the dash the lip went all the way in and it didn't really interfere with anything so any way you slice it, it should work just fine.

The reason behind cutting off the lip on top was because when building a dash like this you lose your windshield defroster and that extra metal got in the way of my solution. To remedy the situation got some flexible ducting and a long oval ducting flange. Then I cut a hole in the tub to match the flange and then a matching hole in the under side of the windshield frame. I also cut a matching hole in the rubber seal creating a sealed passage from under the dash to inside the windshield frame. At that point I hooked up the ducting and flange under and behind the dash. Now when I set the heat to defrost all that warm air would fill in the whole windshield frame. Next I made cover plates to cover up/seal the holes where you can see the wiper linkages. Lastly I made up some little vents to fasten to the windshield frame and cut holes and fasten them to the windshield frame. This way the whole windshield frame is heated and I have warm air blowing on the glass.

Hope this helps.
