Camo paint the hardtop or not?
Ok, I finally ended up with full doors and hardtop for my Jeep YJ. I’m still working on some alignment issues but I thought I’ll post and let you guys know where I’m at with this one.
The full doors and hardtop that I bought were black in color. My jeep was grayish-gold and I personally just hated that color. So, I decided to go the simple and cool way, the OLIVE GREEN. So, I started testing and painting one panel at a time
and here is what I ended up with.
Note: This paint job was done in an apartment ally and I have no experience painting. Neither do I intend to send my Jeep for shows…I just wanted something that did not look like it was pieced together and looked uniform. The paint job is pretty moderated.
Now, My big questions: Do you guys thing I should paint the top Camo as well. It’s a darker camo paint that I have (see the mirrors/spare tire camo) and I think it just might fit into the scheme. Or is black a neutral way to go? Please advise.

To further explain what these marking means:
CRM-CH stands for registration number of my Dad's scooter. My Dad passed away in an accident (Oct 2008) because of some incompetent driver. CH stands for Chetak.
89YJ1391 stands for 1989 YJ and last four digits for VIN number.
KA-09-Q 6174 : registration number of my first bike that Dad bought me.
HQ-1: was intentionally put on left side just to avoid confusion with the real Army trucks. Note they have HQ info on the left.

Kinda looks like mine. Looks good...I'd stick with the black top. Then again, I'm partial to my olive drab-black-only look.
Did you spraycan it all in the alley?

JeepFrogger 07-09-2010 02:34 PM

That's good...enjoy! make it your own.

Actually I got the idea from the moderator of this Forum...they had one and sold it. I had to get one myself.

Yup, only Spray cans here. I had to do one panel at a time, this is my DD.

I say stay black. Looks good w/ the black flares

I would keep it black, But if you did paint it and didnt like it, you could always paint it black again. And I like the battle roster number on the hood, very kool

Paint the top and flares to match

You're treating your Jeep the way a lot of people treat their tattoos. But if you change your mind down the road, it's going to be a lot easier and less painful to fix.

I say go for it.

Battle Rooster? What's a Battle Rooster? And why does it have a number?

Actually I painted the flares as well. I used plastic paint that you get at HomeDepot.

Being in the military, I feel that the olive and the black are perfect. It's simple and the stenciling adds a nice personal touch. I enjoy your explanation of each number. The "No Step" is perfect b/c already people have stepped on mine and i have seen it bend.

If you do decide to go camo... I vote Digi Camo (marine corps style... not that faded army stuff).

Looks great!

I LOVE THAT COLOR! I might do that to mine...

awesome jeep man, diggin the color

I like the way the soft top looks with the little bit of (no offence) dirt in the grain of the vinyl.
Ordinarily I would be against painting the top some off breed color but in this case I say why not. As stated before, if you hate it you can always put it back to black.

One thought though, you really ought to go with the same color on the flares & top. If you get too many colors it will be bad juju. As it is now, you're perfect with the three - green, white, black.
If you throw a fourth in there it's going to be unsettling to the eye and revert back to a patchwork quilt effect.

I will add that OD green is my favorite color. Seriously.
If Ajax were in need of a paint job, he would very likely go green. Fortunately, he is safe for now.

I like the color scheme you got here, where did you get the paint and is there a color code you used? How has it held up since you did it? I have a YJ too, and think I'll do something like this in the future too but I'll stick with the black soft top. Looks good! :thumb:
