How do I get better gas mileage?

I am thinking I get about 16mpg right now. That's with a 4" Lift, 31" knobs and a 2.5L auto that's probably sucking my wallet dry! Can anyone give me any pointers, I read a want ad for a jeep getting 30+ miles per gallon and he or she was trying to sell it down in South Carolina/Georgia area, I was wondering if that was just crazy talk (marketing to sell it) or fact (some sort of conversion)....

doclouie 07-10-2010 12:03 PM

That is just crazy talk unless they swapped the engine with a Geo Metro. ha ha. The only thing that I have heard that helps is swapping out the mechanical fan for an electric one, but I would be surprised if it gives you a mile or two more. It is a Jeep and Jeeps are about as aerodynamic as brick walls. It just kinda comes with the territory. Feed the beast as long as you can. Intake and exhaust mods do not help you at all, trust me I tried.

Uranus 07-10-2010 12:35 PM

Maybe coasting in neutral down a steep hill with the engine off......

flatline 07-10-2010 12:41 PM

what gears are you running? regearing is usually needed when running bigger tires so the engine doesn't work as hard. friend with a 4 cyl gets over 18mpg with 35's. as long as he stays light on the throttle.

Vanimal00000 07-10-2010 12:52 PM

They might've had the fat finger syndrome where they accidentally hit the 3 instead of the 2. I put up 20+, but that was once and the only difference was because I filled up in Tennessee rather then Indiana.

ratuna 07-10-2010 01:10 PM

Sell it and buy a 4cyl jap car. Thats about the only way you'll see 30+ mpg any time soon.

Kate 07-10-2010 01:19 PM

Unfortunately, there really isn't a lot you can do to them to improve MPG.
You're really not doing too bad right now if your numbers are correct.

InfernoGirl 07-10-2010 01:29 PM

Shoot, I'd be giddy if I got 16mpg........ :)

Don't drive as much, or get a different vehicle.

asphaltaddict 07-10-2010 02:21 PM

Was talking to a friend the other day that had done a 350 swap in his old cj7 and actually got better gas mileage than i do lol

Warlock 07-10-2010 02:31 PM

I've got the 4.2, I average 16 to 16.5 all the time.

schnutzy 07-10-2010 03:01 PM

the best way to get maximum millage out of your jeep(or any other vehicle for that matter) is simply to make sure its running at 100%. this means keeping up on all maintenance, tune ups etc. make sure you use products that work well with your engine, ex: some spark plugs work great in jeeps, while others can cause the jeep to throw a fit. its all about keeping the engine running at its best and most efficient. now this is a jeep, so you are not gona get amazing millage, but just keeping it running right will give you the best results.
now some people will say that running synthetic oil and such will net you better millage, but so far i havent seen that switching back and forth with it in our vehicles. the main reason i like it is cause of the longer times between changes.
so basically just make sure everything is running good, and everything is lubed/greased/oiled up. add friction will hurt your millage.

schnutzy 07-10-2010 03:04 PM

oh yeah, and go easy on the skinny pedal, ive yet to see a car that got better gas millage when it was driven like it was stolen, instead of taking it easy.

It's a magnet that were supposed to put on the gas line. ... that purport to miraculously save fuel by aligning the fuel molecules have been around for many years.

mythbusters tested both those products and discovered(big surprise) that they dont work.

also, that tornado thing works just like a TB spacer, which is already useless on a jeep.

most products like this are what we call "snake oil"

ok lol. ive met people who actually believed that those things were worth there weight in gold, so i wasnt sure if you were serious or not.

rogertc1 07-10-2010 05:28 PM

You get no good gas milage with a YJ 4 banger. Not the purpose of it. it is to have fun and in my case a 2nd childhood.

Kohrs93 07-10-2010 05:39 PM

Why would you even ask such a question. It's a jeep, not a prius. Get used to sh*tty gas mileage.

drea 07-10-2010 06:07 PM

take the doors off and lighten the load :)

ratuna 07-10-2010 06:24 PM

Or you could take up hypermiling, it will save you a lot of gas but probably take all the fun out of driving your Jeep. Unless you enjoy hypermiling. Hypermiling :: Even without a hybrid car, no more need to compare gas prices

rogertc1 07-10-2010 06:34 PM

Right lets compare the USA to India...stupid. India is a 3rd world country.

Increase Gas Mileage

1. Get a K & N air filter. Increased Airflow will help.
2. Replace the bearings in your wheels. Obviously newer bearings will roll better than older ones. Get them repacked, replaced, whatever.
3. High performance plugs and wires
4. remove spare tire and winch "then it doesn't look like a jeep"
5. Keep your tires inflated closer to their maximum. This will give you the best mileage possible.

30+ mpg...that's crazy talk...never heard of anyone even getting 20 mpg!
With your tires and the lift, you are getting great mileage. For a 2.5, the only way to get better is to go to closer to stock original tires...29" I think...now keep in mind, you went to 31" and I bet didn't do a regear on the speedometer to get things matched up for tire size...so your readings are off!

Undead-89 02-09-2011 12:06 PM

I've gotten 20 Mpg on my 89 4.2 on two separate occasions. The first was when one of the venturis clogged on my 2bbl and I couldn't idle at stoplights.

The second when I was using my Jeep to move for two weeks and driving like an old man. Slow acceleration cautious turns maintaining huge following distances and watching lights so I wouldn't have to stop. I have a theory on the second one. I think the gas pumps were reading incorrectly at the station so they could charge you for more gas than they actually sold.

Best bet get youreself $2K and buy a old honda LOL..Jeep are not great on gas and never will be...but at least they go anywhere and are fun to drive...My motto "I know its slow...at least it goes anywhere."
