Wrangler V8 Fuel question. Please Help
 
Hey all,

I'm currently in the process of finishing my Chevy 350 swap for the TJ but am currently stuck. I've done research on this website and even called novak and advance adapters and have gotten turned in all different directions. My question is how did you get the fuel to your motors? I have a carburated setup that requires no more than 6psi and the stock electric fuel pump from the fuel tank is pushing around 50psi. My first thought was to get a regulator but everybody i called said that they will not reduce such a drastic amount of pressure plus they will damage the electric pump in the tank over time even if it has a return line or not. But it looks like this is the route that everybody is taking on these forums. The people at novak are telling me to use a mechanical fuel pump and run lines from the tank to the mechanical pump but they werent sure how on how to run the lines. I was also suggested to go to napa and get a 13 psi throttle body internal pump but napa was unaware of wth I was talking about and I dont have a part number. So right now im sort of stuck and was wondering...How did you guys work with the issue of getting fuel to the carb?

Holley Used to make a 7 psi electric external fuel pump...
I used it on a '71 pontiac that I converted to 4bbl and it worked great...
good instructions and I don't think it even needed a return line...
It's been a few years tho but you might check into that

I also have a TJ w/ a vortec 350. I run an external pump But added a return line to the tank for fuel injection. For a carb setup I would drop the tank and remove electric pump and regulator, you'll have to safely fabricate this using fuel hose to replace the removed components. Add an external electric or mechanical pump w/ in line filters.

Be sure not to damage the float & sending unit for fuel guage, if you are reusing stock instruments. If using aftermarket guages, now is the time to replace sender or make sure stock sender works w/ your new gauge. Mine does not read accurately, I have a 0-90 ohm aftermarket guage & stock sender, it reads 5/8 full when tank is full. 10-180 ohm guage might work better, still working on it.

I First hand am experiencing the technicalities of using the stock YJ fuel pump, and have a nice fuel pressure regulator. The Pressure is too high for it. I thought it was my carburator that had bad floats and so i bought a brand new holley truck avenger 670. Turns out The PSI from the pump in the tank is too much for the regulator to handle. . It wont flood out if im driving, but idleing in the garage the carb will just flood out all over the intake. If anybody has a good Idea to fix this problem I would like to know. Also i have the bolt in cradle mount. Would a mechanical pump be able to fit?

I will try to hold back the disappointment of you stuffing a carbureted engine in a tj. Try Jeff Daniels . They make a new sending unit drop in for diesel conversions that should also work with a v8 and mechanical pump.

convert the 350 to fuel injection requiring 50psi. problem solved, and you won't be going backwards in technology.

Any other V8 wranglers out there having any luck with The fuel pressure regulator being able to control the flow from the stock 41 PSI down to 5PSI?

^^^ This. Either electric fuel pump or mechanical. Mechanical should bolt right up to your block and would not require any goofy wiring. Or you could use one of these: Buy Holley 12-801-1 Electric Fuel Pump 12-801-1 at Advance Auto Parts
Looks like it's for a 305, but should work for you. But, if that's not enough flow, there's "Edelbrock Quiet-Flo" electric pump that'll put out up to 160 gph for you. If you go with an in-line electric pump, mount the pump close to the gas tank with an in-line filter between the pump and the tank. I'd also put another filter up by the carb. You could probably use the factory wiring for it, but don't quote me on that one...you'd need to check the specifications on the pump and the factory wiring (amperage, loads, voltages, etc...). Disclaimer: I'm assuming a lot about your set-up, but this is what I'm thinkin you could do. As with any info on the internet, take it with a grain of salt, and do your own research. OR as UnlimitedLJ said - convert it to fuel injection - just google "tbi conversion".
