CD Radio antennae

Has anyone just bought a radio antennae just for looks? I was thinking of doing this before I pony up the cash for the whole radio. I've seen a couple jeeps with big 8.5' antennas without the radio...Any suggestions?

Don't be a poser..you can get a radio for $30 and that is all you need for wheeling..It would be like putting a winch with no cable..What good would it do?

^^ Agree...

only $30? I was looking online and it said they were like $200...I guess that site is crap. Ok, I'm getting a radio. What do you think is the best combination? Or are there kits you can buy?

Find a truck stop on the HWY. I have a Midland 1001z and paid $29.99 last week at Pilot truck stop..I also have a Cobra 19DX and it is ok. Works good but like the Midland better.

Also don't get an Antenna that is 8.5' long all you need is a firestick 3' or 4' depending if you have hardtop or softtop and those will run about $25. The Firestick is adjustable for your SWR meter reading

I started with a full 8' whip - great for radio performance but pretty hard on the mount as you keep hitting the trees off road (if you are out west it would be great). I switched to a 4' wire wrapped and it works great, just not quite the range.

Search some of the forums and you can get some good ideas for mounting the radio.

Can't you bend them forward and tie them down when in the woods? Or can you buy something to do that...

If you bend them over you will be loosing all the range so what's really the use of that? Having to jump out of your jeep just to untie your whip to get ahold of someone is not only a pain in the butt but also can become quite dangerous depending on the situation. I've got a Wilson Flex hooked up to a unmodified Cobra 19dx and that can get me up to 5 1/2 miles of range. The Firestick is a good antenna but I found them to be a little bit on the stiff side when bashing through the forest and when in winter.

I do not care so much about range because the people I will be talking to will hopefully be within a couple miles of me. Then if I do need to get a hold of someone far away, I can just unhook the antennae.
