Fender Laws
 
Hey all. Looking to get some bigger tires in the near future. If I go with the 15" rims, and 33's like I want, my tires will end up being about 1 inch beyond the fenders. Does anyone here have experience with failing inspection because of that? Any trouble from Police?

MA is very intrusive with inspections. You may fail. Any chance you can keep your stock wheels or pick up a set of the bicycle tires to throw on for inspection? Many people pass inspection it just depends on where you go..

MAcops are more worried about tints and speeding than tires. I wouldn't worry too much about those

The worst that will happen is you fail, borrow a buddies wheels, pass, put yours back on.

I asked a state trooper about this and actually photocopied the law from the handbooks they carry around in their cruisers. According to Mass law, 4x4 vehicles are allowed 1-2" of tire hang beyond the flares. That being said, it is up to the inspector as to whether or not he will pass you. Even with the paper in hand, I had a guy refuse to inspect my vehicle because he said he'd have to fail me (this was the same guy who passed my rig 12 months prior no questions asked). I went to another place and they passed me no questions asked. I didn't even have my doors on and he said "you wear your seatbelt, correct?" Allegedly, the state is cracking down on inspectors and a pass grade to a vehicle the state deems unworthy is a $10,000 fine.

All depends on where you go. The laws in this state are so unclear when it comes to this stuff, some people will say you need 100% coverage, some people will say you don't. My recommendation? Pick up a set of old Rubicon flares on CL and throw those on. They'll give you an extra 1" of clearance.

Per MA law Part I Title XIV Chapter 90 Section 19 (https://malegislature.gov/Laws/Gener...er90/Section19) -

"no passenger motor vehicle shall be operated on any way if such vehicle has the side wall or thread of any tire projecting outward beyond the outer portion of the fender or side body panel, unless such vehicle is equipped with four-wheel drive or is otherwise modified and intended for off-the-way use."

By my reading of this 4-wheel drive vehicles are exempt from that provision! w00t!!!!

Of course, YMMV... :-P

Depends on how you look at that last part. Does the "and intended for off-the-way use" go with both the "equipped with 4wheel drive" part AND the "or is otherwise modified" part or just the "or is otherwise modified" part.

I THINK the correct grammatical (thus legal?) way is just with the "or otherwise modified" part. Which would mean that if it has 4 wheel drive, it doesn't matter if it is intended for off-the-way use. If "or is otherwise modified" was separated by commas then we would be screwed. NOT a grammar geek so could be totally wrong here but I think that's correct.

All I know is that there have been a lot of laws loopholed because of punctuation mistakes.

my tires hang out past my fenders about three inches. never gotten stopped for them knock On wood.. but for inspection I throw my stock tires and wheels on, and when I pass the big boy tires go back on.

That's why. Cops really don't stop for that kind of thing. It's more of a compliance law than a moving violation. Throwing cheap stockers back on is an easy way to pass
