Tow Strap Question

I know most of you are not very fond of Smittybuilt products, does this also include their tow strap? 3 X 30 30K LB pull, $36.00
Can you recommend anyone elses that is reasonably priced?

Vaultzz 07-19-2010 03:19 PM

Yea...go to pep boys, auto zone, walmart, any store like that and they will have them cheaper. They are just plain old bright yellow straps with looped ends. Same stuff but cheaper.

Only reason why these companies sell them for more is because it has a name on it...smittybuilt, rugged ridge, arb, whatever....

I had good luck with the pro-comp straps. no problems for 5 years. I tend to use it a lot as a tree saver, or to wrap it around big rocks when there's nothing else to winch to.

My error, I was referring to a recovery strap!!

Maybe we can try this again. :wavey:

KBR97 07-19-2010 06:00 PM

same answer...local auto parts...$20

 yup all the information is the same, I just didn't want you to try yanking someone with a tow strap at 20 mph ;)

Bobthegod 07-19-2010 07:29 PM

Go here for the good stuff.

4X4 Winch Lines at Winchline.com: Winch Line,Winch Ropes, Recovery Gear, Tow Rope, Synthetic Winch Line

InfernoGirl 07-19-2010 07:39 PM

DKarge87 07-19-2010 07:53 PM

Tractor supply has nice stuff too

darin.1701 07-19-2010 08:33 PM

ok, this is going to be a really stupid question i am sure, so please be nice....

what is the difference between a recovery strap and a tow strap?

Vaultzz 07-19-2010 08:40 PM

Recovery Straps: Are used when pulling stuck vehicles out. They will stretch out to compensate for the force of yanking and then contract again pulling the vehicles out

Tow Straps: Will not stretch and are used to generally pull stuff as in if you got someone out with a recovery strap and had to tow them back to the parking lot

No questions are stupid questions :)

If you yank with recovery strap then you'll most likely pull the vehicle out.

If you yank with a tow strap then you'll most likely rip something off of a vehicle

Or one, if not both, of the parties is going to end up with some serious whiplash...

Think of a recovery strap as being similar to a very large bungee cord...except it's not gonna stretch nearly as much (though it'd be interesting to see someone recover a vehicle with a huge bungee cord)

darin.1701 07-20-2010 12:04 AM

ok. thank you for the answers. that makes perfect sense. now i need to figure out which kinda strap i have... but that can wait till morning...

Make sure to get video when you do this.

I'm picturing a giant bungie snaking thru the trees, over the river, etc. And about a zillion miles an hour.

Let's do it!

:wavey: Thanks for the answers and explanations about straps. I was going out today to purchase one. I would have bought a tow strap, now I will purchase the correct one, a recovery strap.

They are also referred to as "snatch straps".

Recovery Straps - Tow Straps - Proper Usage

Here's some good info on the difference between recovery and tow straps.

birdhunter 07-28-2010 06:28 PM

I would add

Get nothing that has metal/hooks or ends
get the loop-end one

BIMBY 07-28-2010 06:40 PM

:eek:did I hear snatch...................

Hendy 07-28-2010 07:06 PM

So can you get a "Recovery Strap" at Wlamart too? I don't think I have ever seen one there.

Jerry Bransford 07-28-2010 07:10 PM

I'd be surprised if I found a true recovery/snatch strap at Walmart, most likely it would really be a no or very low stretch tow strap.

wasurfer86 07-29-2010 12:53 AM

dont tie any knots in a tow or recovery strap as that can cut the working load in half. if you see any visible damage toss it. also if the strap doesnt have a working load labeled on it dont use it. i do a lot of rigging at work and have seen straps, mooring lines, and wire slings fail and you dont wanna be any where close when it happens.
