poly bushings vs rubber
I have a 98 TJ sport that is going to need some slow rebuilding(due to funds). I'm needing new bushings in many places and was wondering if there was any thoughts on Poly (like energy suspensions) vs rubber ? What's the benefit ?

I have had both, different control arms and in different locations.

So far my personal experience has been that rubber is better.
It has more flex to it, when twisting, more forgivness. This seems to help prevent tearing and cracking.

My current control arms have poly busings in them. We replaced them about 2 months ago, have made three minor trail runs, and they are already busting out again.

I'm not a fan of poly bushings. When I get some extra cash, I'm going to put johnnie joints on the bushing ends of my control arms and be done with it altogether.

Poly bushes will also cause more vibration to come through the cab and body of the jeep. Poly is superior as far as racing applications but for driving and 4wheeling stick with rubber. Or spend the money and get some good heim (johnny joints).

Having had poly mounts and components in my last Jeep, I'll just say never again. They tend to squeak and pass far more road vibration than rubber does. Plus rubber usually outlasts the Jeep too. There's a number of reasons automotive manufacturers use rubber mounts & bushings and not polyurethane. :)

On the other hand, I will never use rubber engine mount bushings ever again. But at the same time I'll never use EnergySuspensions poly bushings again for engine mounts at least. They have a piss poor ancient design that requires use of the original clamshells and there is actually a lot of work in putting them together. Get pro thane or Currie Engine mounts.Rubber sucks.

Bushings suck . . . rubber is better than poly . . . but they suck too . . . chop em off and weld on a Johnny Joint like Kate is doing and be done with it.
