Diff.& Transfer Case Fluid

Does the front and rear differential oil really need to be replaced after 12K miles as the owner manual states?Have 79K miles on my Jeep just bought it so don't know when it was last changed. How much oil do the differentials take?Does anyone ever change the transfer case fluid or the manual transmission fluid?

The 12,000 mile diff fluid recommendation is for severe duty schedule (towing, farm, desert, etc.). Interestingly the owners manual and factory service manual don't have a listed interval for "normal" use schedule.

I think 60,000 would be a good time to change it. Same with the manual tranny fluid.

I would change it out as it may or may not be the original oil from the PO. If I remember correctly each axle holds 1.5 to 1.75 quarts of fluid.

Synthetic gear oil

Thanks for the info. do y'all think Castrol syntec 90-140 would be good to put in the diffs.?I don't want to have to bust them open and clean the gears for a while. What type grade and amount for the manual trans.?

ive heard that the rear axle with the limited slip has to have a special oil with a friction additive. somebody who knows more will chime in soon.
