winch on stock bumper

First off I would like to say that I have learned a ton from the great people in this forum.

Now to my question...can I mount a winch straight to my factory bumper? I have removed the "milk jugs" and I like the way the stock bumper looks. I would rather spend money on the functional parts for the jeep and worry about looks later.

Thanks for the help.

Just the stock bumper...NO!!! The top surface is not large enough "most winch bolting patterns are 10'' by 4.5''. That and the stock bumper is way too thin. The mere weight of a winch could bend it.

Can you put a winch on your jeep and use the stock bumper....YES.

To mount a winch you MUST use a winch plate. These bolt to the frame and on top of the stock/or after market bumper. Only other option is a bumper with intergrated winch plate.

I will be in the same bind here soon. I can only have items shipped to me that weigh 70 lbs or less through the USPS without having to pay a ton of money in shipping so I am stuck with a stock bumper and when I get my winch, paying for a winch plate. Considering the price of a winch plate, I would much rather pay an extra 100 bucks for the bumper with the integrated winch mounting platform than paying 130 bucks for just the plate. I suggest pulling the trigger for a whole new bumper that has it integrated than just for the plate with the stock bumper.

As stated above, yes you can use a winch plate which mounts to the frame and your winch will then mount to this plate. I got my winch plate for 70 bucks from 4wd.

Warn winch on a Warn mounting plate with NO bumper. It was on a stock bumper for 5 years before this too.

I believe the bumpers and frames are pretty close to the same between a YJ and a TJ. Here is a winch plate mounted to the frame with a stock bumper still on the Jeep.

The bumper may not look like a stock bumper but it is. I just cut the ends and boxed them in.

Thanks...this forum is great

Thanks everyone...I will be getting a plate and sticking with the stock bumpers. I don't plan on doing any crazy wheeling any time soon but it is piece of mind that I can get out if I get stuck and after reading the reviews on here I will be going with a warn winch for sure.

Do the winch plates have to be bought from the same manufacturer of the winch itself, ie are the mounting holes in the plate manufacturer specific?

Everyone on this forum has been a huge help with my questions, it is a wealth of knowledge that people here have.

I may have to try and box in the ends of my bumpers I think I have some left over steel plate in the shop form another project just waiting to get used..nice work coyote_94yj

The winches themselves have a standard bolt pattern but you will need to make sure that the bolt pattern to the vehicle is for a TJ. Some are interchangeable between the YJ and the TJ but others are not so just make sure before you buy it.

Your welcome. We're all here to help. And thanks for the complement. It was fun making it but it would have been funner if I had had a plasma cutter to help get the job done. ;)
