Bigger is Better oil filters
My wife has a 98 Wrangler Sahara 4L and with all jeeps wev'e owned I always check out them littel tiny oil filters their so small what are they for well!!!!! the 98 jeep will take a Fram PH8,Motor craft, a FL1a the two are both real BIG over twice the filter media and holds more oil in the motor AND!!!!!!!! they will fit no hassell like no problem Its got to be better all the way around BUT now I have this 08 4 door and already found a BIGGER one for it JUST longer,by the way the threads work gaskets the same and been dooing it for ever no problems,let me know what you all think this might help.Boney:rofl:

Oil filters got a lot of ink a few years back. They were sawed open to reveal the various configurations of filter media.

One major concern at the time was an efficient anti-drain back valve. The other was the type and quality of the filter medium.

Purolator Pure One was rated pretty high. The Mobil One with its fully synthetic filter medium came out the highest.

So, I can't answer your question, but do question your assumption that bigger is always better.

FWIW, I took auto mechanics in high school many years ago. The teacher ran a new design oil filter arrangement whose media were rolls of toilet paper. The year was 1964 and I don't think the idea ever went mainstream. But you can't argue that it didn't have one hell of a lot of filter surface.

If you change it on a regular cycle, 3K for all my vehicles, size does not matter.

Bigger is better if you are looking at extended oil change intervals (synthetic oil) with a high efficiency filter. It also provides a bit more oil in your system.

Th Fram TG-8A (large size) is probably less expensive than the Fram TG-16 (regular size). Mopar also makes a large filter (for Fords that take an FL-1A) which works great on my vehicles and at the same price as a regular size.

If the big filter is the same price or cheaper, go for it. "Trade price" for Mopars filters is about $3.00 here.

If looking for a premium filter, it will have a silicone - orange (versus nitril - black) anti-drainback valve. It will also have a synthetic filter media versus cellulose and will have a multi pass efficiency (per ISO standards) of 97 to 99% or better.

I have actually cut some filters apart to take a look at their inards - Fram TG-8A, Ford FL-1A, Mopar Regular and Large, Wix Premium. Of those filters, only the Fram and the Wix were premium filters.
