Took a break from the Jeep today to do this...
I went today and paid my respects at the Dive site of the USS Emmons sunk by 5 Kamikazes during the battle of Okinawa. She sits in 130 feet of water. Hope you all enjoy.

Thanks! Looks like a great dive. Very interesting. I did a search of USS Emmons and found a ton of good reading.....will be checking it out!

Great pictures. Kind of creepy when you think of how powerful that ship was at one time.

It was an amazing dive. You head down the descent line and when you are about 15 feet down the outline starts to come into view. It was peacefully beautiful but still locked in battle 65 years later.

wow, really good pics. I can only imagine seeing that in person.

convict27 08-04-2010 09:26 AM

I dont even have words to describe what it was like to see it in person. It was like seeing a ghost through the fog as I descended on to the ship. You could imagine the entire scene of battle and exactly what was going on by the positions of the guns who now stand with eternal vigilance.

Good to see that someone stuck on that rock is haing a good time.I spent almost a year there teaching at NTA back in the early 70 - 71. I used to snorkel off of Red and Blue beaches and at that time much of the bottom was covered with artifacts left over from the battle.

cavediverjc 08-04-2010 09:45 AM

Were you on air or Nitrox?

convict27 08-04-2010 06:28 PM

Cavediver, I was on air.

Gate53, I actually love it here on Oki. I dont have to worry about theft and have no problem leaving the top off in the parking lot of my apartment overnight. It helps that I have my family over here with me so that improves things a lot. The rain part sucks so I dont always get to run completely topless because of the storms that just pop up out of nowhere.

great pics! but i can only imagine the water pressure down that deep.. I swim down about 15 feet and it gets unbearable.. do you dive often?

convict27 08-04-2010 06:40 PM

I dive at least twice a week. The pressure really isnt all that bad when you learn how to clear your sinuses properly. I remember when I was first learning how to dive and I thought my head was going to explode. Now I just clear every 5 seconds on the way down and then I am good. After I get to my final depth, I dont have to worry about clearing anymore. It is kind of like flying. When you first take off you have to clear on the way up but after you get to altitude, you dont have to worry about it anymore.

cavediverjc 08-04-2010 06:53 PM

Do it 4 times a day for 10 years and your body will do it automatically. You don't even have to think about it.

convict27 08-04-2010 06:58 PM

You are right Cavedvr, I dont even think about it now. It just comes naturally so when I see people having a hard time clearing I have a hard time explaining it to them because I dont even think about it anymore.

osu50sprinter 08-04-2010 07:03 PM

how much bottom time did you have to explore?

convict27 08-04-2010 07:08 PM

Down at 113 feet I only had about 13 minutes to explore. I didnt plan on doing a decompression dive so I didnt want to push it anymore than I had to. Basically we did a multilevel dive with 13 minutes at the bottom, then we went up to 90 feet for another 10 minutes looking around and then another stop at about 75 feet. You could still make out the ship at that depth but you could not study the details like you could up close.
