Soundbar or not?

Im thinking about getting a soundbar for my YJ. Any opinions on them? Which one sounds the best? I dont want to use up floor space as it is limited in space to begin with.

wasomma 08-07-2010 02:28 PM

i have a soundbar in my YJ, I didn't install it (got it from the previous owner) but it sounds great. I love mine, i'll get the manufacturer info next time i'm in it.

93wrangler 08-07-2010 09:17 PM

I also have a sound bar in mine, I think it has alpine speakers in it, not 100% sure if I am remembering correctly. Sounds great and definitely a must have, puts the speakers right above your head which is great since we all know jeeps with no tops/soft tops aren't the quietest things out there, lol.

I'm struggling with this question myself, fredw68.

Lately, I've been leaning towards a "boom box" solution that I can take with me on the road and remove from the Jeep.

Check out the sound bars over here:

I don't have one, but my argument would be that the quality of the soundbar would rest on two things... quality of speaker and quality of soundbar build itself. As to the speakers, if you're not happy with them you can always install your own. As to the soundbar build itself, having looked into getting one myself, I haven't really read any bad reviews on any of them.

That said, you could always build your own. ;)

drivebytruckerz 08-07-2010 10:20 PM

My TJ came with one.. it's a must really, if you actually want to hear the radio/stereo at highway speeds at any normal volume.

Kohrs93 08-07-2010 10:32 PM

I have some pioneer speakers that i just installed in my dash (not sure what size, i think it's 4x6. It's the same as stock size.). I can here it perfectly fine on the high way with the top down. I'd like a soundbar, but this works fine for me.

Pullsout 08-08-2010 12:27 AM

i thought about getting one two but i went mudding lastnight and there was alot of brush that whiped over my head and had i had a sound bar that thing would still be siiting in the mud in the woods. My thought is if you don't plan on pushing through some trees go for it otherwise i'd be weary.

Ibuildembig 08-08-2010 12:29 AM

Factory ones are fine if you swap out the speakers

Wrangler Haven 08-08-2010 10:13 AM

Yeah the factory sound bars for the YJ came with Jensen paper-cone speakers which were ultra crap-tastic and didn't last long if you ever got caught in the rain with the top off. Any sound bar will improve the sound quality in your Wrangler but make sure you get some Poly-cone speakers with it.

You def want a soundbar if you are tight on space, like all YJ & TJ folks are. Also, if you plan on going topless & or doorless you NEED a soundbar. I have a 95 YJ & just put in a 6 speaker(with dome lights) Rugged Ridge soundbar. I mounted it and took it to Best Buy to do the wiring(like $40). I can hear my music just fine on the highway doing 75mph! LOVE IT! First thing I did when I got my jeep was replace the cd player, the 2 "crap-tastic" dash speakers and then soon after the soundbar. Check out my profile for pics...

I just put JL's in my sound bar. Made a HUGE difference.

Ibuildembig 08-08-2010 09:55 PM

ANYTHING is an upgrade to Jenson lol

Well, I can think of a few that are questionable haha

Geoff@Bestop 08-08-2010 10:16 PM

A guy at work put nice boat speakers in his CJ. The kind that boaters use to help waterskiiers hear the music. So, um, loud. But they sound pretty good. Two of them, mounted along the sides in the back.

Pullsout 08-09-2010 01:37 AM

i just put 6x9s and mounted them to the wheel wells

fredw68 08-09-2010 07:29 PM

Any brand of sound bar better than another? Im guessing any of them is going to have crappy speakers that will need to be replaced, but what about the sound bar itself? Are they all plastic?

93Wrangler44 08-10-2010 07:37 AM

How did you get the speakers in the factory location? Do you have to take apart the whole dash or can I just remove the front plate somehow?

Ibuildembig 08-10-2010 09:01 AM

I have had one with 6 drivers in it, but I wasn't really impressed. The stock soundbars are steal and not plastic.

jeeps&comics 08-10-2010 09:11 AM

i dont have a soundbar, but have sound pods, something like this, but i got it from ebay and without speakers for pretty cheap (Vertically Driven Products 793501 - VDP Overhead Sound Pods for 87-06 Jeep® Wrangler YJ, TJ & Unlimited - Quadratec) and get compliments on my soundsystem all the time.. if you replace the front stock speakers and get sound pods, you'd be fine. but a sound bar is just as good, so my recommendation is yes, get one, and brand doesnt really matter as long as you install good speakers, and make sure it's mounted good

Just-Jimmy 08-10-2010 09:51 AM

Definitely a must have! Get any soundbar and upgrade the speakers!! They are all built pretty good but some hold more speakers than others. Mine holds 6. 2 Full Range, 2 Mids, and 2 tweeters. The tweeters can be swiveled to face any direction you want the highs pointed in!

N8whitie 08-13-2010 08:27 PM

Geoff@bestop has your answer. The boat speakers kill any other speaker set up. They even have the clamps that clamp on the wakeboard tower and they fit perectly on the roll bars. And yes... they are loud as hell.... not to mention they look cool. The only problem I see is that they would be easy for a thief to get their grubby little hands on if you roll around with your top down alot. Look on Ebay, you can find some pretty good deals.

Gee oh Dee 08-13-2010 08:44 PM

I've got a factory sound bar in mine, its awesome. Haven't taken the doors or hard top off yet, but I still like having the soundbar. Its factory, though, so I'll have to end up replacing the speakers.

fredw68 08-13-2010 08:55 PM

Does anybody make a quality soundbar? Are they all plastic?

Find someone parting out a factory one.

Now, that's good advice Gee oh Dee.

i have a soundbar in mine and it is fantastic. i think for the most part they are all the same. like everyone said above it all depends on the speakers you put in. i also bought a set of the 6x9 pod things from quadratec that fit between the roll bar and rear wheel well. they work very good, but the speakers that come with them are TERRIBLE. better to buy without the speakers and supply your own. finally, i have been to several bone yards in my area and i have noticed that many of the jeeps have either a factory or aftermarket sound bar in them. you may be able to pick one up on the ultra cheap if you have some yards around your area you can explore.

93jeepwrangler 03-29-2011 09:05 AM

Im thinking of buying a soundbar, but im totally sure how to install it. Anybody have any ideas?

NewYJOwner 03-29-2011 11:07 AM

I have a 2 speaker sound bar and a pair of sound wedge's with 6x9's, All are run through an amp mounted under the rear seat. You may lose a little rear travel in the seats with the wedges but i'm 5'8 and no issues with leg room in mine. Can hear the tunes with no problems whatsoever. Having the soundbar puts those speakers close to your head and helps you hear the music without cranking the volume way up.

Most soundbars, if you pull the velco flaps (that wrap around the srpeader bar) there is a metal plate that wraps part way around the spreader bars and has 2 holes on each side, you drill into the spreader bars and run some screws into them to attatch the soundbar securely.

Agreed. I have kicker wakeboard tower speakers mounted to my roll bar right behind each seat. I like music loud and clear and they definitely do the job.
