Might be a stupid question

I was wondering if anyone can help me identify something I found on my jeep.

It looks like a metal tag with a few sets of numbers, but I cannot put together exactly what it all means. I have circled the area where I found it on the front end.

under the cover

behind the sway bar
http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d1...7-1931edit.jpg

here it is
http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d1...00807-1937.jpg

It reads:
X MEMBER TJ 118723

CKF GCF GSV GTV END
T J JH77 PX8 QX8 LSK5
U ERH DDD 1P314772 6762

I could be wrong on most of those digits.

And ideas would be :punk:

An x member is a transmission cross member. These photos are not from a Jeep, but they illustrate well. The second is an aftermarket "low profile" XMember. You may have something like this under your jeep, and the tag is the identification for that part.

I did notice that while I was changing my oil a few weekends back. I was thinking it was a pretty cool piece of metal under there. Too bad it is night right now or else I would take some snaps

Thanks bud

TerrorJ2001,

Have you received any other info on the tag? I found one in the same location and I'm wondering what all the numbers mean.

Here are some of the codes on the tag

TJJ - Left Hand Drive
H - Price Code
77 - Wheelbase (93.4")
U - Market Code
ERH - 4.0L 6cyl MP1 Gasoline
DDD- HV3550 (5 speed manual)

Not sure on the rest but I'm guessing two of the 3 letter codes are paintcodes - and LSK5 looks like an interior trimcode.

Thanks Wesboy. Does anyone know anything about the X Member (cross memeber) Where would I look for this on my Jeep. Also, who screwed the tag on there anyway...Do all TJs have these?

My 04 TJ has that tag. Not sure who screwed it on there.

Jacqui 02-16-2013 05:13 AM

Our '06 LJ has that tag, as well. =)

Philmycrackin 02-16-2013 08:16 AM

i have never noticed it, but now i want to go look for it

yes all TJs have a transmission/t-case cross member. it holds the whole drivetrain in your Jeep. you're concerned with trivial useless things.

the tag is an assembly line remnant. it told the factory information. you'll find similar remnants all over the Jeep...

an assembly line worker did. Maybe his/her name was Joe.

sounds like something joe would do.

PX8 - Black Clear Coat

google-fu also shows QX8 as meaning black. I don't know why there would be 2 different paint codes... Maybe it's base and clear coat.

krisbman 02-16-2013 09:35 AM

PX8/QX8 is the paint code. Its straight up black. PPG's DMD 1683 to be exact, one of the cleanest blacks out there!

Yeah, no. The tag isn't for the cross member, it has that stamped on it to identify where on the Jeep (the cross member) that particular assembly line ID reference tag goes. I other words, this ID tag goes on the front cross member.

G-LOVE 02-16-2013 09:50 AM

:( My tag rusted off.

I mainly just wanted to know if my Jeep had something extra special on and it IS interesting to find these things. I confirmed that my brother also has one on his '06 rubicon. The reason most people don't see them or know they're there is that it's under that Jeep piece on the front. That piece was removed in mine by previous owner so the tag was visible.

I would be glad to teach you about your discovery.

This is completely incorrect. What you are looking at is your Jeep's secondary fendertag. 'X MEMBER' is stamped there so that the line workers would install the correct fendertag in this spot. There is another primary fendertag with even more information on it; you'll find that one inside the passenger compartment between the door and the driver's seat:

http://dempseybowling.com/cars/98sport/tag1spot.jpg

So what the heck is a fendertag? It is something Chrysler assembly line workers began using back in the '60s when building vehicles. The tag contains RPO codes identifying select equipment which was to be installed on the car as it was built. All the codes on a fendertag will also appear on the corresponding vehicle's build sheet, though a build sheet contains many more codes which are not found on the fendertag. Think of the fendertag as a short version of the build sheet.

(If you don't know, a build sheet was the computer printout showing every last piece of equipment found on the car. It was printed by the factory when the car was about to be built, and it was usually taped or otherwise attaches to the car as it progressed down the assembly line. Since it is so complete, in theory if you were handed a build sheet you could build an exact replica of the car in question because it tells you everything you'd need to know.)

Hey--somebody else recognizes what you've found! This is all correct info. The H (in TJJH77) designates your Wrangler as a Sport model, and the U indicates it was built for the US market.

As for some of the other information shown, let's take a look.

CKF = rear seat with rear carpeting
GCF = full metal doors with roll-up windows
GSV = right side manual mirror
GTV = swing-away mirrors
END = end of codes on this tag
1P314772 = last 8 of your VIN

This is also correct, though the code is actually L5K5 (for Camel cloth seats).

Not quite. PX8 indicates black as the primary color, while QX8 indicates black as the secondary color. For cars with monochrome paint, the P and Q codes will always be the same. For a car with two-tone paint, the paint codes will naturally be different.

I'm curious how long it will take you to get up from your computer, go out to your Jeep and look for the primary fendertag. ;)

/\ Great info there, Sherpa :thumb:

JeepTopDown 02-19-2013 10:02 AM

Wow..all i ever wanted to know Sherpa! Appreciate this. I may actually put the tag back on now..And yes, I will look for the primary tag.
