trouble with reverse
 
the gear works but, I left it in reverse in the parking lot today instead of using the Ebrake and when I attempted to start her up and put it into reverse it sounded like i was trying to put it into gear without engaging the clutch even though I was. I'm not gonna leave it in reverse anymore but I was wondering if that was weird and something I need to look at or me being dumb where I'm not supposed to leave it in reverse.

The Reverse Gear is not where you'd want to park your Jeep wasomma. It's a smaller and more fragile gear depending on what you've got going on.

yeah, i haven't had an e-brake in i don't know how long so i always throw it in first. not saying that is the best thing to do, but it seems to work. don't like to park on steep hills and do it, but sometimes there is no choice i guess. could always fix the ebrake i guess.....

Without an E-Brake kj 92yj, your Jeep could "Pop-n-Creep" down the hill backwards. The transmission may let go one gear at a time under pressure and suddenly give way backwards down the hill.

After a while or parking, the backwards creep could gain momentum, and then your Jeep starts rolling down a hill until it backs into another Car or someone's House.

hey! i don't like the sound of that at all. guess i better get to work and figure out how to adjust mine. the adjustment bolt is sooooo rusty that i think i'm going to have to sheer it off and put on a new one. i don't think it is going to take much work....but was something i was putting off. better rethink! thanks for the advice!

The synchros were not lined up. In my jeep I learned a trick. 1st then reverse. No more grinding.

I had this happen...It hit some guys boat and then some bushes.:D Good times.

man that's crazy... but with regards to the OP, i was informed there is no synchro for the reverse gear, so as rednek said, 1st then reverse, works everytime. and it rhymes.

man that really sucks! yeah, good times......lol, i bet..........well you've all convinced me that i need to cut the rusted adjustment bolt currently there and put in a new one. weekend project already! COOL!:zap:

When my jeep was doing it I thought the cause was loss of compression. The weight of the jeep would slowly turn the motor.....I'm not sure if that's possible but That was my excuse.:confused:

I don't follow....

1. You left it in reverse, assuming you backed into a spot and shut your machine down.
2. Instead of using an E-break...Did you park it on an incline or use that to stay put?
3. How can you put it into reverse if it's already in reverse to begin with?
4. Clutch was acting funny...

To me, given what was said..I assume you parked get away style and your clutch acted up. If you can shift a manual transmission with out engaging your clutch...what does that say? There is a mating process made between your engine and your transmission with you being involved. That connection is your clutch. If your foot is not involved in that equation, your clutch may not be releasing or it could be stuck. Pull it apart or have someone do it for you, it's more fun to do it yourself. Check all applicable problems in the clutch family before you get into turning wrenches. If all fails, check out what is "sticking" and work from there. My bet is your clutch is messed up, just make sure you don't use an air hose to clean out any fiber/dust from the housing, it will make you stupid....you'll want to go jogging with Forrest Gump.

the jeep shifts ok, actually since I changed the tranny fluid and tcase fluids its been really nice. I parked heading downhill, so i thought if I engaged reverse it would stop the forward motion of the vehicle which it did.

The issue is when I took it out of reverse and started the car, then reengaged reverse using the clutch I got a grinding sound from the tranny.

Basically here is what the deal is, no synchro for reverse means if you leave it there under pressure and reengage it you will have a problem getting it back into gear. Also as was mentioned before reverse is a fragile gear, not meant for parking. I use the ebrake mostly now, I may or may not leave it in 3rd depending on the situation but not reverse anymore.
