Home Brew Overhead CB Mount
i needed a new place to put my CB. i had it mounted on my shifter console, near my right leg, but i kept hitting it with my leg and it was very irritating. after looking online at all the overhead consoles on the market, there was no way i was paying $150 + for one. then, the Macgyver in me came out and said (like it has so many times before) "i can MAKE that!"
so.. with a quick run to home depot, here's what i came up with. the console itself is 7" wide, 3/4" MDF, cut to fit between the windshield and center roll bar. the front is attached by first drilling out my footman loop (if you have a TJ from '02 and under, yours just unbolts, the '03 and higher ones are welded in). i used a metal 'hurricane tie' - i think that's what they're called - to screw the MDF to, and then to the windshield frame. the rear is held together by 2-3/8" fence clamps. all that's left is to coat it with some water seal, and then either paint it black or wrap it with some automotive carpet and then mount up my CB.
total cost: $7.00 for the MDF, $2.00 for the fence clamps, and $.88 for the hurricane tie. lucky me, i had some self-tapping screws lying around, so those were free. and i think i have less than an hour's time putting it together. i only had some battleship gray paint on hand, so that's the color she's got for now. my rig is silver, so i guess it matches a little.
now i have my CB up and out of the way, and i think i'll mount my maglite up there, along with some fuzzy pink dice...
anyhow, hope this inspires the "Macgyver" in you!
:zap: Yep, just like mine, only costs $800 bucks
i did something similar to mine as well... i just ran mine horizontal across the windshield... i like the look of that though... very nice.
GTH- I like how you ran yours sideways. It reminds me of one of the pilot truck drivers setup I know that runs the haul road.
JIMBOX- do you have any more pics of your cb mount/switch panel setup. Or if you could point me to any threads that would be great. Your setup looks slick as all get out. I had that same cb but due to the current lack of mounting locations I returned it for a much smaller uniden model.
:D Heh Heh, well the CB is mounted to my ROCKHARD rollcage, thats where the $800 bucks comes from
There's a source (relays, fuses, terminal boards) and a 6-switch panel that goes on the windshield upper Bezel, with a shielded/insulated harness with weather proof (aircraft) connectors, between the two--super setup
This is the sw. pnl as I'm setting it up for sw/pnl installation !!
Go to Google and search sPOD and you'll get all the data, they're made in Souther Calif. in Castaic and "John" the owner is "customer friendly"
Now the cost is about $450/475, so it has to be worth it to you, I've put about 10 similar acc. sw sys in and this is a lot better than anything I've done, or that I've seen !!
