I have a jeep wrangler 2010 since may, best ride I ever had.
After 4000 km, the dash asks me to change the oil ... I find it a bit early for that. The instruction manual says 10 000km or 6 months... I found that kind of late ... what should I do about that ? I don't mind changing it if it means the car stay in a great condition ! I love my baby and I want to take maximum care of it.

You will get a million different opinions and it's been discussed a million times.
Personally I will change at 5000 miles (8000km) and that is using synthetic which allows you to stretch it a bit further IMO. Sometimes I'll change sooner if I go 6 months first, which is usually the case as I don't put on many clicks. I question the 6 month part as I can't see how oil degrades sitting in the pan, but I'll do it for warranty purposes.
At 5000 miles the oil gets black and I just get uncomfortable with it.

I would say if it tells you to change the oil then do it.

Listen to the instruction manual. Shut the reminder off by turning the jeep on without starting the engine pumping the gas to the floor three times and then turning it back off. The reminders will stop until another 4000km or so. When you take it in to the dealer for PM ask them to set the reminder to what the factory says for oil changes. If they do that, it won't come back on again until about 9500km. It may trigger sooner if you meet certain operating conditions like in 4 low a lot. Mine hasn't tripped early in 36,000 miles of driving and some of that off road.

Regarding the post having to do with spending all that money on the jeep only to cheap out on oil, I would totally disagree. I keep my vehicles typically at least until 120K miles and then sell them. The jeep will probably be an exception to this as I have no immediate plans to turn it over even at 120K miles. I'm going to keep driving this one well past that...at least that is what I see for now. Since I've owned cars, I have always changed oil at the larger interval which is typically somewhere between 6 and 7.5K miles. This has had no effect on the value at trade in or resale. The only car that I had that pushed a little oil was a 75 Pinto station wagon that I bought at 40K miles used. I don't know how it was cared for prior to me purchasing it but I drove it until it was totaled at 100K miles while it was parked and I was in my SCUBA class.
Now, that having been said my jeep has been consuming oil...a quart every 2K miles. Since the jeep was serviced in Florida, it has been 3K miles and I've only used 1/2 of a quart. The consumption of 1 quart per 2K miles had been consistent up until this last oil change...makes me wonder if the local dealer is using some cheap grade of oil. I pulled a sample in Florida and am going to have it tested to see what is going on.
In all of my vehicles I've used non synthetic oil with excellent results. My VW Jetta made it to 240K miles before I traded it in and it owed me nothing. It wasn't consuming oil even at that mileage. I expect my jeep to do the same. Changing the oil every 3K miles in my opinion only helps the oil companies and adds to the oil disposal problem. Some folks just can't help themselves on this issue and must change every 3K miles...I say do whatever floats your boat but don't expect to get any portion of your money back in added value at trade in time or resale time...because folks in the know just won't pay additional money for an overly maintained vehicle but dealerships will certainly froth at the wallet while taking your money trying to keep your vehicle in tip top shape...especially if you are willing to pay...they will even try and convince you that you are doing the best for your car (jeep in this case) even though the manufacturer says differently...go figure.

Of course the instructions say 10,000mi, they want you to screw it up so you MIGHT buy another one. The more you change your oil the longer the motor will last, I do mine every 4000km. Ever look at used oil? It's black for a reason, air/oil filters DO NOT filter out everything add to that the harsh environment of the internally combustion engine and you have a recipe for engine wear being pumped all over every lubricated surface inside your motor. If you don't drive very much do it every 3 months.

Experience of doing nothing but what the manufacturer has stated for as long as I have been driving have produced no engine failures from lack of lubrication on several cars with average distance driven before trade of 120,000 miles. Sure, over servicing won't hurt but isn't necessary.

Just as a reminder, do check the oil periodically if you use the longer interval. You may find that a quart is needed before the PM. So far the jeep is the only vehicle that I have owned that has needed oil added before the regular PM. Better to be safe and check every couple of thousand at least.

Thanks Guys ! I guess that changing the oil sooner than later won't harm my motor... I'll check le oil color and level and then I'll find out what appropriate time would suit me best to change it ...

Sounds like a plan. Come to think of it, when I was in my teens and early twenties, I did get into the maintenance thing on my cars. Frequent oil changes and even synthetic when it first came out. I think Mobile1 was the only game in town back then. That was for my 69 Camaro. Then I got into the job and family thing and time became short. I'll continue doing the longer interval now because I just haven't seen any financial gain to do otherwise.

Does anybody know the reasoning behind changing at 6 months if you only had say 1000 miles on it? What does the age matter? I've always wondered this, other than selling you another oil change before you need it.

:D The jury's still out on synthetic oils and like "instant" HP increases, it's still in the individuals pocket book and head !!
I changed to Mobile 1 and K&N oil filters years ago and all I can say is I'm just happy withit !!
The main reason for stating 6 mo or a specific mileage is that !!
Even if the vehicle is driven for SHORT intervals, condensation, acid rain, exhaust contaminants degrade the oil, so it loses its "magic" lube abilities--not just actual operation and engine wear !!
The longer the oil sits at the bottom of the oil pan, the more it picks up of the above and previous contaminants !!

Im planning on doing the switch to synthetic after my first oil change.
Then I do them myself.
Did I read somewhere that the stock JK oil filter is the correct one to use? And not to go aftermarket filter?

I'd change it myself, but a friend of the family owns a shop and does it for me for $15. Cheaper for me. I change it every 4-5K.

free oil change
when I bought my JK (brand new) the dealership offered me a FREE CHANGE OIL for 5yrs. or 100,000miles...are they using a new oil or recycling oil....any ideas or experiences....
