jeep wrangler jk unlimited performance mods...

i am looking to put an exhaust and intake on my jeep wrangler because it just doesnt have enough power for me...
can you tell me what the best intake and exhaust is but i dont really want the exhaust to be loud so it gets annoying to drive every day. just one that is normal until i get on it...
also i was wondering what the best sounding is and does it really make that much difference?
thanks

A search will get you a couple hundred threads on the subject with all of the information you are seeking.

Superchip it

cameron 08-19-2010 09:07 PM

does a super chip really do that much?
does it make it sound any different?

Robs20104dr 08-19-2010 09:14 PM

Yes. I put a flowmaster exhaust (deeper note) and a banks cold intake kit. The super chip is a great tool. Has more upgrades then the superchip for my 2002 ram

jk'n 08-19-2010 09:19 PM

Regearing will be money better spent from what I have been reading in the JK forum.

how much more power does it have not then it did before?

cameron 08-19-2010 09:21 PM

i have 3.88 gears now im fine for gears for now
i just want to get as much power as i can for under 1300

daggo66 08-19-2010 09:37 PM

OK, I don't usually give this information out, but you really seem sincere about wanting more power and better sound. What you need is the Soundracer V8.

Did you mean 4.88 gears??

cameron 08-19-2010 09:46 PM

haha thats great

hdman1216 08-19-2010 09:46 PM

It is a TOTAL wastse of money to do intake and exhaust. This 3.8 is a POS motor. Drive it like it is and wait until they make a better one.

cameron 08-19-2010 09:47 PM

no i have the mountain gears
i forgot what they are

i disagree
i have had a ton of people to tell me to do that and put a superchip in it

jk'n 08-19-2010 09:58 PM

Maybe 3.73?

Anyway about the POS comment regarding the 3.8 you will see opinions all over the place on this. I just got done pulling my trailer with 2 - 2.5k lbs and 4 kayaks up top to Florida from Mass. and then up to Maine with close to 3K lbs towed and 3 kayaks up top. After all of that hauling I would call it the little engine that could. Ya, I had to downshift up some steep grades and pedal to the metal in 4th with the engine turning at about 3.5K to maintain 55 to 60 but there were tractor trailer trucks on those same grades falling behind me, unable to keep up. So it is all relative. I would say it pulled that load admirably. I'm happy I have the 4.1 gears as I think that helped. With a standard, off the stop mine is no slouch. But I know I won't blow the doors off of a corvette nor should it. It is designed to do what a corvette can't do: climb hills in the woods and it does that extremely well. :D

cameron 08-19-2010 10:01 PM

yes 3.73
and i agree i just think it needs more hp and torque
i went off roading yesterday and i just didnt feel it had as much as it could.
but still i never got stuck with it even stock:0

Shonky and the Soundracer totally make this thread worthwhile.

I don't think that the power gained will equal the money spent on that. Gearing produces better torque per dollar spent. There has been a lot of discussion about this in the JK forum. The search function will turn this up. Hilldweller has posted many times on the topic. He has a pretty good handle on it.

I can only come up with one question to people who feel the way you do. Why did you buy it?

cameron 08-19-2010 10:07 PM

il look into that but i also want a better sound
and if i put new gears then i will lift it and tires and ect...
thats why it not all ready sitting on 35s with a 6 inch lift

Well regarding off roading: if the terrain is challenging enough, pop it into 4 low and she will seem unstoppable. There is so much torque in 1st gear in 4 low that it seems almost impossible to stall it.

cameron 08-19-2010 10:08 PM

the jeep is a great car
i love it and it is great
but i just want a little more power

i agree it basicly doubles your power when you put it in 4 low

jk'n 08-19-2010 10:09 PM

wOOt...1800 posts!

daggo66 08-19-2010 10:10 PM

It's not a car. Sell it and buy a Civic with a loud muffler.

cameron 08-19-2010 10:11 PM

i have a bmw m3 for that smart guy
this is my 3rd car that im trying to get ready for going to the mountains next week

Reminds me of Scotty in Startreck. :D

Seriously though, sometimes I feel like the jeep is clunky. It is usually coming off of the stop when my feet aren't quite coordinated and I get off of the line like a bucking bronco or the jeep gets into this engine funk thing someplace in-between stall and running and I wish the thing had more power but it is just me being uncoordinated. It can sometimes be downright embarrassing especially in front of my daughter's boy friend.

But then I think about the big picture of jeep and their product line. They have to meet certain emissions standards and that has put a crimp on how big an engine they can put in the jeep. The engineers have sharpened their pencil and have come up with this 3.8 engine. There is just so much power in her and by-skotty, that is all she can deliver. Superchipping it may help a little but I don't think it will add so much torque the she will be forgiving of my uncoordinatedness. Now a V-8 would probably make her behave like she does in 4low, that is, she seems to like it no matter how uncoordinated I may be on the clutch.

now this is what im talking about
AEV / Nth Degree 40307013AA - AEV 6.1L V8 Hemi Premium Conversion Kit for 07-10 Jeep® Wrangler & Wrangler Unlimited JK - Quadratec

jk'n 08-19-2010 10:27 PM

Followed your link...now, that would add some power!

BTW, daggo was wise cracking because you were calling your jeep a car...it's a truck. Jeepers get offended when you call it a car.:p

cameron 08-19-2010 10:29 PM

oh yes it would add some power
and oh i though i put truck my bad.
