Only 4th Gear in AX15
My wife was cruising along on the freeway in 5th gear when the engine starting revving up and the Jeep started slowing down. She pulled over and couldn't get the Jeep to go anywhere. Upon further messing around, we discovered that she has no gears except 4th gear. In addition, you can switch the gears to any other gear except for 4th without the clutch. This includes reverse. Fourth gear works just fine. You can push the clutch in and as long as you feather the clutch and give it enough gas, you can get it moving. This is a 93 Wrangler with the AX15 transmission. Any ideas anyone?

do you mean she has lost 1-3 and 5? Sounds like your clutch is slipping and needs servicing.

She lost gears 1-3, 5th and even reverse. My initial thought was the clutch, but if that was the case, why would 4th gear grab so firmly. I can start off in 4th gear from a dead stop without any slippage at all.

its because in 4th the ratio is 1:1...everything is aligned and its straight through from the input to the output. If it stuck there you need a tranny....or at least a rebuild

Makes sense to me. And I figured that a rebuild was looking more and more likely. Obviously a rebuild kit is not going to come with anything more than bearings, seals and synchros. Anybody have a good source for any new gears I might have to purchase?

if you need the actual gears, buy a used tranny, way too expensive to buy new gears. you could buy a new tranny for less than all the gears and idler shaft. if you need anything it will be bearings and sychros and those will come in the rebuild kit if you get a good one.

So it turns out the teeth on the input shaft were completely ground off. THis in turn chewed up the mating gear on the cluster gear shaft. Looks like I will be calling wrecking yards looking for a good used unit. One of my buddies suggested upgrading to a NV3550 while I was at it. What's the story on the 3550? Is it a better trans? What would it take to mate everything up to the 4.0 engine and the NP231 transfer case? Any thoughts would be appreciated.
