So I changed my oil tonight on my 2010 JK for the first time. Prior to this I had some knocking on acceleration. Nothing too bad but it was getting more noticeable. Since driving around tonight, the knock is gone. Could it have been low oil?? I have 5300 miles on it and unfortunately made a boneheaded mistake by not checking the oil level since I bought it back in May. Figured the dealer would have had it right. When I drained the oil, it sure didn't seem like 6 quarts. Just hoping I did no permanent damage to the motor.

I did the same. No permanent damage. It had been using a quart every 2k miles for quite some time. Had the oil changed in Florida on vacation so the regular dealer didn't change it for me. Been 3k miles now and still doesn't need a quart. Makes me wonder what the dealer in my area has been using.

BTW, I check the oil now at least every 2k miles.

Mine seems like it uses about a QT every 3,000.

I'm a little old fashion, but i was taught to change the oil on a new vehicle after 500 miles incase there was crap floating around from manufacturing. maybe not an issue these days.
My engine has a little lifter tap sometimes on startup, but goes away after a couple seconds.

^^ The first new vehicle that I had that said in the owner's manual not to change the break in oil because it was done at the factory was on my 2000 Dodge Caravan. That got it's first oil change at 7,500 miles as it said in the manual to do. It went over 100,000 miles and I never had to add oil between changes. Real tight engine. My wife's car a PT Cruiser has 140,000 miles on it. It got it's first oil change at 6,000 miles and has been changed faithfully every 6,000 miles. It goes 6,000 miles with no need to add any oil even at it's current mileage. The jeep is the only vehicle that I have bought new that needs oil added between changes. I'm in the process of having the oil from the previous oil change analyzed to see what is happening. Long story short: follow what the owner's manual says. Chrysler wrote it and will replace the engine if it falls out of the engine compartment. Over-servicing it will not add value to it but under-servicing it will cause warranty denial. Give it what Chrysler says it needs. Over service it if it makes you happy.

There have been some complaints of engine "knocking" due to defective oil filters. Probably changed your oil & filter, no knocking. When I took delivery of my 10 Rubi at 6miles it was a 1/2 qt. low. I decided to top it off myself and have'nt had to add oil since. I did have it changed at 1,500 with a free oil change by the dealer. I then changed it at 3,000 and then every 3,000. I do over service, can't help it. The initial oil change is important to do early. After that, whatever makes you feel comfortable not to exceed 6,000. These engines are tempermental regarding oil use. It seems some do and some don't. I don't think anyone can figure out why. I guess it all depends if the robot had a rough weekend.

I have a 2010, have changed the oil every 3,000. Seems to consume a quart every 2500-3000 miles. Other thing I've noticed: When I run 87 octane, it knocks/pings like crazy. And with the knocking & pinging comes faster oil use (1 quart in 1500-2000 miles). I now run 89 octane almost all the time. The knocking is gone - at least for now. Terribly disappointed with having to worry about checking the oil every time I get gas. My '91 Cherokee (I-6, 4.0) had nearly 200K on the odometer and never had to add oil. Same for my '04 GC (also I-6, 4.0). In hindsight, wish I'd bought a used Wrangler to stick with the I-6...

I have gotten used to the oil checking routine. I do it more often on all of the family vehicles now. I used to get extremely nervous on my jeep when the indicator was near the bottom of the safe zone but now don't sweat it too much because even below the safe zone slightly there is plenty of oil in the crankcase that there will not be issues. My consumption of oil hasn't really changed all that much and I'm at about 80,000 miles now on the odometer. Maybe as some point I might have to do a short block. Even that doesn't worry me too much....especially if Chrysler does it for me under the lifetime warranty. That is why the dealer does my oil changes every time....so there is a continuous record.
