SO, I have these holes in my tailgate and I don't know what they're from. I dont mind them, but I might as well use them. for a high lift? Jerry cans?

pakman55 08-25-2010 11:45 PM

I see black and the last 4 digits of your licence plate. "5583"

That'd be "S583".

And OP, what are you specifically talking about. Your pic is UBER small and doesn't explain what your talking about very well. Can you blow it up and circle via MSpaint or something similar?:wavey:

Gee oh Dee 08-25-2010 11:51 PM

Maybe your tire carrier was replace? Or something else was moved/altered and the original holes were kept?

dale914 08-25-2010 11:52 PM

k, I'll try, I have to tip up my moniter to see, look at the black dots on the tailgate. them's them

Gee oh Dee 08-25-2010 11:57 PM

I see what looks like a door lock and some extra screw/bolt holes. And I'm on a good monitor, so its not my comp messin with my eyes.

Did you check the opposite side? Maybe something internal is or was mounted there?

2000 TJ? My 98 TJ doesn't have them. Maybe something aftermarket was mounted. Different spare holder, or an aftermarked rack/gas can holder. I've seen them on TJs.

OK, take two! In relationship to the door handle to open the tailgate, there is one at the 11 o'clock, 10, 7, and two at 6. filled in with black plastic caps

Gee oh Dee 08-26-2010 12:07 AM

Bullet holes? The lady friend and I are really leaning toward an old aftermarket piece that was removed. The caps are prolly a lame attempt at covering the holes left when the XXX(whatever) was removed and sold for extra money when the Wrangler was sold to you or a stealership.

dale914 08-26-2010 12:09 AM

sold by a neighbor who said it was never offroaded or with the roof off, but I found an L bracket for a bikini top, so... his previous owner??? I cant figure out what would be there. lame covers indeed. nothing poking through the other end. I'd be happy to throw on a high lift or jerry cans

JeepCreeper 08-26-2010 09:36 AM

Take another pic during the daytime. :P

I have no idea..

Looks like somebody got a new drill and just had to try it out...(yes this is the best guess I could come up with)

Neil F. 08-26-2010 11:48 AM

Regardless what they were for, I assume you are not using them. I also assume they are currently open. I would close them up to look better and keep water out. At the auto parts store you can get plastic push plugs. Paint the edge of the hole with some touch up paint. When dry apply some silicone or RTV around it and put the plug in. To be less noticeable, you can paint the plug body color before installing.

Hehehe... makes me think of my license plate.... I took off the mounting plate the other day and mounted it to the tub. Only thing is I had a few problems drilling the new holes for it, and now it looks like swiss cheese... Trey said I should get some bullet hole stickers from the auto parts store to put on it.....

You assumed wrong, and would have known this if you'd read the entire thread.

dale914 08-30-2010 07:33 PM

now with the better pictures, no ideas? I'd be happyto mount a jerry can or a lift on the back, but am happy to keep the holes number to a minimum

Gate53 08-30-2010 07:41 PM

I don't think I'd put to much weigh on that end of the gate.

AzTJ 08-30-2010 07:43 PM

More than likely used to be a bracket or something there, maybe for a CB antenna.

GoldTJ 08-30-2010 10:00 PM

Whatever it was that used to be there,it looks like it would make handle access extremely difficult,if not impossible!Maybe it belonged to a fat and gimpy old Grandma and that was part of her Rascal scooter hydraulic rack!
