So my straight 6 auto yj is getting around 10 mpg on the average..... is there something wrong here or is this normal? And any sugestions on getting it better?!

pakman55 08-27-2010 10:36 PM

Normal. You are driving a brick with wheels.

Mine gets about the same. And maybe 15 mpg on the freeway. Well driving from Seattle to Idaho I got 15.

I want to help but I can't stop laughing from the first response.:D

InfernoGirl 08-27-2010 11:10 PM

What size tires? and has the speedo gear been changed to reflect the tire size? If not you are getting a false reading with oversized tires.

ESP 08-27-2010 11:15 PM

x2 could be your ECM needs some adjusting.

It's correct I have a Carbed 4.2 and get that and I deliver mail in it. So there is always stopping and going in mine and it dosen't matter it's around 10 -12 mpg. We don't drive Jeeps for the MPG we drive jeeps for the look and abilities they have.

scramblin'wrangler 08-28-2010 07:35 AM

O I hear ya! I love the jeep! Its just everybody around here (my area) whos had one said thats really low. I mean think of it...... 4.2 with just rear wheel drive and its getting 10 mpg? My GF has a grand cherokee with a 6 cyl and its getting 20...... I know mine doesnt weigh that much different and FI cant make that much of a difference.
And I didnt even think of the cable being different! I've only got 31's so would that make that big of a difference?

Oh yeah..... brick with wheels. ;)

With my 89 4.2 5 spd. I avg. 20 hwy and 16 city. Maybe it's time for a tune-up.

InfernoGirl 08-28-2010 09:17 AM

Not sure about YJ's but I know TJ's mpgs get crappy when the O2 sensors are blocked, or they need a tune up.... Might look into that. Has it always been that low, or is it a new occurrence?

Dons_Jeep 08-29-2010 08:32 AM

I have a 95 YJ 6 with a 5 spd and I average around 17 mpg just cruising around. I got around 22 mpg on the highway going up to the airshow in Portsmouth yesterday. I hope that helps you.

Vaultzz 08-29-2010 08:39 AM

by the looks of your lift in your avatar thats not normal. I have an 89 I6 with a 4" suspension lift, 3" body lift and 33" tires and I get ~16mpg around town. (and thats with a carb thats leaking gas )

I just saw that its an automatic, is it the 3 speed?

What size tires do you have?

uplifted 08-29-2010 09:08 AM

When i was running the I6 the best i ever got was about 12-13 MPG.. Thats was with 33's and 4.56's...... Flat surfaces suck for wind resistance.

Anthony 08-29-2010 09:15 AM

I was getting the same.... my problem was the rubber hoses on the fuel filter dry rotted. if you smel fuel try them....

Fweaky 08-29-2010 09:20 AM

The biggest factors outside of the fact Jeeps have the aerodynamics of a brick is usually gearing, tire size and lift. As you add each it drops. If you can gain tire size without lifting it you can do better but that usually means fender trimming. I have owned several CJs and YJs that were carbureted with 4" lift and 33 inch tires an I averaged around 15 mpg in town in each of them.

wasomma 08-29-2010 02:33 PM

i have a stock 95 YJ 4.0L i average 20Mpg, i drive stick though

drivebytruckerz 08-29-2010 02:41 PM

My 2000 TJ 4.0 gets 15-16 no matter how/where I drive in 2wd. The most you can do is tune up, buy good gas and keep the oil changed. I also coast into red lights and try not to stop too much.

Dons_Jeep 08-29-2010 06:56 PM

Trevor - I am currently running stock 30's. I was getting even better gas mileage, but when I changed out my trans for a new Jasper trans it dropped down a couple mpg's.

scramblin'wrangler 08-29-2010 07:36 PM

Well my tranny says jasper right on it... im pretty sure it does at least. lol That mat be a factor as well? This jeep is new to me..... about a month in with it. And the motor is newly rebuilt from some guy in florida... previous owner told me but I forget.
