Transfer case fluid
Just to be sure...I have a '91 Wrangler 2.5 5 speed...

The fluid in the transfer case is ATF+4....??? Is this correct.

Does anyone know the capacity? A quart or two?

The quick answer is 2 Quarts of ATF+4.

That is what I thought I'd read...thanks FNJ

Don't thank me Rover, there's a board "smack down" going on right now about your question.

I've given you the O.E.M. info. Cheers!

Yup, ATF+4 is what the book says but I've ran 90wt in my case for 10 years with zero issues. :D

Please coyote_94yj ! Explain running 90wt in the transfer case!

I'm not convinced running ATF is the correct solution for a 91 Jeep 2.5L.

Well, the factory service manual for my 94 that I used to own said the transfer case uses ATF.

Here are a couple of reasons I ran straight gear oil in the transfer case.

1) It isn't going to do any damage. It will make it harder to shift on the fly but I don't do that anyways.
2) It is thicker and is less likely to leak.
3) Why carry a whole bunch of different bottles of fluid on the trail. The axles and transmission I had used gear oil so why not in the transfer case as well.

Just my personal opinions and experience but I've been into my transfer case a number of times over the years and the gear oil has worked just fine.

Now what??? I bought the ATF...I also have 5 qts of Amsoil 80w90...a better choice? Synthetic I know...

Since I just went to the store and bought the ATF+4 that is where I'll begin...unless someone convinces me otherwise.

I'll also go check out the 'smackdown' know just to muddy my

In your case Rover, I would just stick to the ATF. That is what is already in there and to change to a different fluid would involve rinsing out all the old ATF. Where is this smackdown taking place?

agreed yea if you decide to switch to something else you'll have to make sure you really get the old fluid out.
